M A celebratory centerpiece is the 22nd annual Portland observance of Interna tional Women’s Day, to be held March 9 from 10 am to 6 pm at Montgomery Park, at Northwest 27th Avenue and Vaughn Street in Portland. International Women’s Day events are orga nized by a nonprofit all-volunteer committee “dedicated to the celebration of women in Port land.” According its mission statement, the IWD committee is dedicated to “going beyond cultural barriers and prejudices” and creating an “envi ronment that is respectful, inclusive and support ive of the values and points of view of all women.” To that end, the day will feature a di verse array of entertainment, food, vendors and exhibits. Not surprisingly, while men are welcome, women take center stage. Exhibits will include the Silent Witness Ex hibit, a moving memorial to women in Oregon who have been killed by domestic abuse; the Clothesline Project, created by women survivors of abuse and violence; and Women and Their Work, which includes photos and stories of women in nontradi- tional careers. Entertainment can be found on two stages, and will feature an African dance performance; the Portland Lesbian Choir; Latin song and dance via the Mambo Queens; Motherlode, a quartet performing acoustic contempo rary folk music; Aurora Chorus; Judy Rose, piano and vocals; and Jane Doe, a guitar duo. A day’s worth of women’s poetry readings is scheduled as well. Among those slated to read are Judith Barrington, Anne- Louise Sterry, Pam Crow, and a selection of “young women read- ___ ♦* ers. Additionally, health and en vironmental matters will be spot- Motherlode lighted. The YWCA Encore Plus and All Women’s Health Services will provide a variety of health screenings and educational materials for women, and some local health care providers will donate their services by offering clinical breast exams, and glaucoma and diabetes testings. The environmental room will include a dis cussion entitled "The Emergence of Eco-Femi- nism,” about women in the environment; a photo exhibit; Circle Round, an interactive presentation with slides about Cobb, natural building initiative and design; herbal remedies; and women activists from Earth First! and Greenpeace. Free parking, free child care and ASL inter pretation are available. The facility is wheelchair accessible. Admission is sliding scale, and no one will be turned away due to a lack of funds. Most of the events take place in PSU’s Smith P Memorial Center at 1825 SW Broadway in down town Portland. The “Night of Bohemian Wonderful,” featur ing bands, singing, dancing theater, poetry and dramatic readings is set for March 7 from 7-10 pm at PSU’s Littman Gallery, located on Smith Center’s second floor. On March 7 and 8, the “Embracing Midlife: A Menopause Conference,” will take place in the Ballroom, also on the second floor. The keynote speaker is Dr. Joycelyn Elders, former U.S. sur geon general. From March 10 to 14 in Smith Center’s First floor display case, you can catch a glimpse of the “Great Women in the History of the Northwest” exhibit, which showcases photos, artifacts and excerpts from books and diaries. I n Other Words, a local women-owned and -run bookstore sponsored by the Women’s Community Education project, a nonprofit organization, is hosting a number of events throughout March. Writers and artists featured in Present Tense: Writing and Art by Young Women, an anthology showcasing previously unpublished art and lit erature, will be at the store on March 13 at 7:30 pm. Their work ranges from Fiction to essay to poetry to an experimental fusion of genres. On March 26, also at 7:30 pm, local writers Myra Lavenue and Rhonda Wheeler will read their respective contributions to Early Embraces: True-life stories o f women describing their first lesbian experience.
