o many people in our community do so
much, but it’s rare for us to stop and
acknowledge those folks who really rep
resent the outstanding yet often very
ordinary, in-the-trenches work so many
of us do. This is one of those times where
pause to recognize those contributions,” says
Susan Leo, chair of Pride Northwest Inc., orga
nizer of Portland’s Pride Parade and Celebration.

Pride Northwest has announced the 1996 re
cipients of the annual Spirit of Pride Awards,
which honor people or organizations who have
volunteered time and energy to raise awareness
of queer people in a variety of communities
throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington.
Leo says this year five individuals and one
organization have been selected from nomina
tions submitted by community members at large.
The recipients will be honored at the Lesbian and
Gay Pride Rally on June 22 in Waterfront Park.
The honorees are:
Marguerite Brodie, who is described as a
tireless worker—often behind the scenes—in
the peace and jus
tice m ovem ent,

also implementing a mentoring program for sexual
minority youth in order to offer support during
initial stages of coming out.

Portland chapter of Brother to Brother, which

to Right to Privacy). He is a graphic/layout de

years, Kinnard has consistently initiated commu
