It’s good, especially for caffeine addicts like me who rarely get a good night of real sleep, to S listen to mellow yet not drool-drippingly vapid music. As I was making some semblance of grooving movements to the Bonnie Raitt-ish ditty “Where Were You?” I realized that there is more to life than mocha. U B 40 The Best ofU B 40 • Virgin fter drinking some red, red wine, I can’t help falling in love with you. So here I am, baby, come and take me because we’re going to Kingston town. And you know what else, I really like the way you do the things you do. And even if there’s a rat in my kitchen, I got you, babe, until my dying day. Ah, such lovely tunes just make me want to go bake some “brownies” and chug down some generic beer. I don’t know what else to do after listening to 20 UB40 songs. Do you? A ne of the reasons I felt glad about opting to attend a venue featuring local women musi cians instead of some other big-name musicians like Bootsy Collins or Ani DiFranco on a recent rainy (duh!) Oregon night was Maria Webster’s performance. This local singer-musician has been in the women’s music scene for several years. From the audience’s response, I could tell that she has quite a number of aptly devoted fans. Webster tried out for choir in high school and was told that she was tone deaf. At 16, she picked up the guitar and started learning on her own. In 1986, Webster moved from San Diego to P-town before the “big rush” (of Californians, that is). She migrated specifically to attend Lewis & Clark College as a sociology major. After enough drunken college parties she believed that she could sing, and even took guitar lessons from Robbie Laws. Webster was obviously not delusional about her ability to sing and perform on acoustic guitar, because shortly after this “revelation” she started performing at such places as Choices, the Lesbian and Gay Pride rally, and in other venues in cities like Eugene and Vancouver, Wash. Clearly a solo act, Webster did try several collaborations with other musicians but found that her wild passionate energy for entertaining was a bit too much for other people to handle. That energy, though, is what made someone like Melissa Etheridge pay attention when Webster started performing backstage after an Etheridge That’s Entertainment! The Ultimate Anthology o f MGM Musicals • Rhino lip on those ruby red shoes, Dorothy, we’re going to MGM land! A packed six-CD set full of remastered hits from hundreds of movie musi cals, this package was released in conjunction with Turner Classic Movies Music. Anyone who has ever been an aficionado of Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Judy Garland and James Stewart (yup, Jimmy sings!) will not be disappointed with this anthology. Hey, who would pass up an oppor tunity to have Gene “Singin in the Rain” Kelly blastin’ on the stereo while you tap away in your living room? The set includes a lovely booklet with pictures S concert (hey, she wanted to be noticed!). Beyond the performance stage, Webster is happily married to her wife, Melissa (not Etheridge), and is helping raise their 3-year-old daughter. Maria Webster has one tape out (check Locals Only), and hopefully some new stuff will be out soon. You can catch her performing live at several different downtown locations (see the Just Out calendar listings). Reviews by Rachel Ebora.
