To the Editor:
Republican Rep. Chuck Carpenter’s endorse
ment of Gordon Smith shouldn’t come as a sur
prise to anyone. Carpenter’s actions are typical of
a person who may be homosexual but certainly
isn’t gay. For a person to understand that they are
gay or lesbian is to appreciate that one is more
than merely a sexual category defined by and
assigned by an ignorant and hostile heterosexual
majority. Further, as a gay man or lesbian, one has
a certain responsibility to other gays and lesbians
to respect and protect our community from the
excesses of the heterosexual m ajority and
homophobes like Gordon Smith. Carpenter un
derstands nothing about his responsibilities to our
community.
What is sad is that Carpenter is stupid enough
to think that being able to walk into Gordon
Smith’s office has some significance to the gay
and lesbian community in this day and age. Our
community has faced down the Oregon Citizens
Alliance, countless hostile politicians, ignorant
jurists, and recalcitrant bureaucrats who stand in
our way in the fight against AIDS. The only
person who will benefit from access to a
homophobe like Gordon Smith is Chuck Carpen
ter.
The best reason for gays and lesbians to dis
trust any politician who claims to be gay or
lesbian while finding his or her political home in
the Republican Party is a politician like Chuck
Carpenter. And it should come as no surprise that
a politician like Carpenter finds his home in the
Republican Party, the political party of Lon Mabon,
Gordon Smith, Newt Gingrich and Bob Dole.

DeFazio deserves our vote
To the Editor:
When we vote in the Democratic primary for
U.S. senator, let’s remember that when Ron Wyden
first ran for Congress in 1980, he promised the
lesbian and gay community that he would sponsor
federal gay-rights legislation. Eleven years later,
in 1991, he finally kept that promise when, for the
first time, he signed on as a co-sponsor of the gay-
rights bill.
In contrast, Peter DeFazio has co-sponsored
the Gay and Lesbian Civil Rights Act every year
since 1987, when he first went to Congress. In
fact, DeFazio has consistently been on the front
lines against both AIDS and bigotry. For ex
ample, he co-sponsored the Ryan White CARE
Act and hosted a No on 13 fund-raiser in his home
in Springfield.
This is not the only issue where I believe
DeFazio makes a better representative than
Wyden. But it is illustrative of basic differences
between the two in their approach to politics as
well as in the depth of their commitments to civil
rights.
Both Wyden and DeFazio are likely to vote for
gay rights, but with DeFazio, we have his heart as
well as his vote.
I implore you to know who our friend is and to
vote for him— Peter DeFazio.
