The duo’s latest release of one of their live performances packs a power punch to everyone ’ s funny bone (well, maybe not Lon or the Pope or the KKK...), combining political satire and injections of their own hilarious analysis of the right-wing agenda set to television-jingle-like S his pretty voice. Why was it not surprising how successful “Cry ing Game” was as a single? And even with a (bad) cover of Iggy Pop’s “Funtime” included in the bunch, I just keep finding myself missing you blind, Geòrgie... M ary K adderly Down Right Big Time • Marymargaret Music ike a piping hot cup of coffee with lotsa cream ’n’ sugar on a chilly winter evening, Kadderly brings a welcome warmth—downright big time jazzy warmth as it may be. This, coincidentally, was what happened to me on a recent trek to a local cafe in my ’hood, one cool eve. Mary was playing the piano and singing songs in the lounge area with an obvious enthusiasm and passion for music. It made my mocha taste even better! Armed with several music books, a micro phone and some speakers, Kadderly filled the space with her almost husky voice in renditions of Motown favorites, old jazz tunes, country music and some other more contemporary tunes from bands such as The Beatles. An advantage of having seen her perform live is that it makes listening to her CD even more enjoyable. A disadvantage? You’d rather watch her instead! Luckily, she’s at Steen’s on Northeast Russell every Monday night from 6 to 8 pm or later, if you keep requesting. L music. Ron and Paul succeed not just in providing comic relief to those of us who are becoming humorless in this seemingly increasingly screwed- up world, they also remind us like a piece of fluorescent sticky note: Long as we’re gonna bum in hell, we might as well have some fun! Imagine Jones’ voice naked and barely clothed by her acoustic guitar and maybe some percussion. I bet it can calm you down better than a dozen Valiums. I bet you will want to get out your guitar yourself and start singing with her, calmly, throughout the whole CD (hey, you’ll have the applause ready). Intimate, nice, pretty. I and lots more! L enny K ravitz Circus • Virgin ircus pretty much has that Kravitz formula: a bit of rock, some funk, a touch of blues and, in this case, some (gasp!) religious fervor (as one might notice in the track “God Is Love”). Despite using his regular recipe, this CD still provides an outlet for Lenny’s multitalented musicianship (he plays most of the instruments on many of the tracks), his song-writing skills and penchant for the macabre (check out the CD insert with the lovely photos!). (Warner Bros.) ’m not really sure why this was re-released (the first Phantom Center came out in 1990). Aside from a change in record label and some slight modifications in some of the tracks (for example, the newer release has a mellower version of “Stand Up”), it still sounds like the same Ferron we know: honest, introvertedly confrontational and spiritu ally aware. Hmmm, come to think of it, this new record label Earthbeat! is a division of a major music giant: Warner Bros. That means that Ferron will now be known, beyond the closets that house our queer CDs, to the “mainstream” crowd out there! It’s about time too... I Reviews by Rachel Ebora, a k a Raging Eye.
