Taking advantage of the tragic murder of nine-
year-old Rachel Carver to publicize his personal
homophobic opinions, Spokane County Coroner
Dr. Dexter Amend blamed the sexual abuse and
murder of the child on homosexuals because an
autopsy revealed she had been sodomized.
The body of the girl was found in June near the
Spokane River. Her uncle confessed to the murder.
According to the autopsy, the child had been repeat
edly sexually assaulted and was beaten to death. A
local news report on KXLY television reported that
court records show her father, her uncle and her
mother’s boyfriend are all suspected of molesting
her over a number of years. There is no evidence that
Rachel was ever abused by a homosexual.
In releasing his autopsy report, Amend said,
“She’s been sodomized over and over and sodomy
is a homosexual act, it is. To have everybody think
that homosexuality is OK is a bunch of baloney. I
don’t care what the political ramifications are on
this. It’s a horrible, unbelievable thing that this child
went through and they [homosexuals] destroyed her
life.”
Outraged by Amend’s remarks, the Spokane
Human Rights Commission has called for his resig
nation. Members of the Spokane lesbian and gay
community are considering a campaign to recall
Amend, who is an elected official.
Amend can be reached at the Spokane County
Coroner’s Office, 1201 W Broadway, Spokane,
WA 99206, (509) 456-2296.
Protests can also be sent to Spokane County
Commissioners George Marlton, Steve Hasson and
Phil Harris at County Commission, 1116 W Broad
way, County Courthouse, First Floor, Spokane, WA

“Jane Roe,” die lead plaintiff in the landmark
1973 class-action decision Roe vs. Wade, which
legalized abortion, came out of the closet as a lesbian
last year in her book I Am Roe. And on Aug. 10, she
announced she has been “bom again” as a Christian
and has left the abortion rights movement.
Norma McCorvey’s conversion process seem
ingly began in April, when the militantly anti-abor
tion Operation Rescue moved its national office
next door to A Choice for Women. That is the Dallas
women’s clinic, offering abortion services, where
McCorvey worked as director of marketing.
Initial hostility softened into neighborly rapport,
then quickly led to McCorvey’s baptism by the
fundamentalist Rev. Philip "Flip” Benham, national
director of Operation Rescue.
She quit her job in early August and has been
sending mixed messages ever since. She told a radio
interviewer, ‘T m pro-life. I think I have always been
pro-life, I just didn’t know it.”
Yet she told the Associated Press she still sup
ported first trimester abortions. “It’s a woman’s
decision in the first trimester, after that it gets
sticky.”
Anti-choice representatives were quick to trum
pet the conversion. Pro-choice supporters tried to
downplay it. Sarah Weddington, an attorney on Roe,
was “shocked,” but said, “It really didn’t matter, the
case was a class-action suit.”
There was no word as to how this might affect
McCorvey’s 21-year relationship with Connie
Gonzales, who still works at A Choice for Women.

High court asked to review
second anti-gay measure
Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund and
the American Civil Liberties Union on Aug. 10
asked the U.S. Supreme Court to outlaw a charter
amendment barring the city of Cincinnati from
passing legislation that protects lesbians and gay
men from discrimination. The ballot measure, known
as Issue 3, also repeals any existing laws that pro
hibit discrimination based on sexual orientation.
Issue 3 was passed by voters in November 1993.
In August 1994, U.S. District Court Judge S.
Arthur Spiegel invalidated the measure, citing nu
merous constitutional grounds. Last May, a three-
judge panel of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals
reversed Judge Spiegel’s decision, ruling the mea
sure constitutional. In its ruling, the Court of Ap
peals said that lesbians and gay men are not an
identifiable class of people, such as ethnic groups or
women, who can be specifically entitled to civil
rights protection.
A similar measure, passed by voters in Colorado,
is already pending before the Supreme Court.

Geffen donates big bucks
Gay Men’s Health Crisis and God’s Love We
Deliver, both New York-based AIDS organizations,
are the recipients of a $4 million donation from the
David Geffen Foundation. This is the largest single
gift to AIDS services ever made.
“AIDS must be everyone’s fight,” entertainment
mogul Geffen said in a press statement. “The rate of
HIV infection and the number of people with AIDS
is growing—but so, too, is public apathy. We hav*
already lost too many friends and colleagues to
AIDS, and we must recommit ourselves to fighting
this deadly plague. I hope my contribution will
encourage more people to come forward and give
generously. In the face of so much death, it’s essen
tial that we do all we can to support life.”

TV Nation serenades Helms
“Love Night” was the theme of the Aug. 11
episode of the television program 7V Nation. In
keeping with that theme, the show gathered a
chorus of gay men who traveled to the District of
Columbia to sing to Sen. Jesse Helms (R-N.C.).
The group sang “What the World Needs Now
(Is Love Sweet Love)” while standing outside
Helms’ senate office. They then proceeded to
Helms’ home, where they performed “On the Street
Where You Live.” Although Sen. Helms missed
the performance, the chorus was greeted by Mrs.
Helms, who said, “The songs were very nice, very
pretty.”
On another segment of the show, a chorus line
singing “Stop in the Name of Love,” kicked up its
heels outside the Aryan Nation’s Congress in Idaho.
