Once the fifth-ranking member of the Church of Jesus Christ Christian/Aryan Nations, Cochran severed his ties with the group in 1992 and cur rently lectures on the dangers of organized big otry. Cochran will speak in Portland on May 10 at 7 pm at the Metropolitan Community Church, 2400 NE Broadway. The event is sponsored by lYide Northwest, the Rural Organizing Project and Beyond The Closet. Local governments oppose anti-immigrant legislation Following in the footsteps of the Metropolitan Human Rights Commission, the Portland City Council and the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners have approved resolutions con demning anti-immigrant legislation. The Portland City Council approved a resolu tion April 12 that condemns “California’s Propo sition 187, Oregon House Bill 2933, and any similar legislation denying undocumented immi grants access to health care, education and social services [and/or] requiring health care providers, educators, social workers, police and others to inform the Immigration and Naturalization Ser vice of suspected illegal immigrants.” A nearly identical resolution was passed by Multnomah County commissioners the following day. The resolution was brought to the Portland City Council by Commissioner Gretchen Kafoury, and to the Multnomah Board of Commissioners by Commissioner Sharron Kelley. The measures are similar to a resolution approved by MHRC in March. Brecke fills vacated seat Coos Bay resident Brenda Brecke has been elected by her Democratic colleagues to fill the state senatorial seat of Bill Bradbury, who re signed in mid-April. Brecke is reportedly a strong advocate f human rights and a longtime friend of the ga lesbian and bisexual community of Coos Count an area known for its conservatism. During her speech before voting delegates at gathering of Democrats held in North Bend ( April 9, Brecke expressed her dedication to u holding the human and civil rights of all Oreg nians, including sexual minorities. North Ber resident Tim Slater and Florence Mayor Rog McCorkle, who had both expressed a proble with the “homosexual lifestyle,” were unsucces fill in their bids to fill the seat. Broker : ™ Mica “Christopher” L. Smith passed away March 30 due to complications of AIDS, in the home of his parents of Littleton, Colo. Mica was bom July 30,1953, in Detroit, Mich. He was raised and educated in Littleton and Denver, Colo. Mica will be most remem bered for his life’s work and contri- butions to those in need, as exem plified by his position in Denver as a client advocate for Project Return and his volunteer work with the Battered Child Center of Denver. After moving to Portland in 1979, Mica served as a case man ager for Mental Health Services West for seven years and then be came a manager for that organiza tion and a co -fo u n d er o f Bridgeview, a residential housing facility for du ally diagnosed clients. Through Mica’s efforts, Bridgeview became a nationally recognized model program for housing of both mentally ill ar drug-dependent clients. While at Bridgeview, Mica also served in voluntary capacity during the creation of Cor munity Health and Support Services, known t< day as Cascade AIDS Project. Mica also serv* on the board of directors of CAP, as well chairir the board for two years. During his tenure on tl CAP board, Mica conceptualized and develop* many programs vital to the service of those livir with AIDS. In February 1992 he accept* the position of executive direct» of Cascade AIDS Project, servir until his retirement in March 19S due to ill health.
