Lovers in the City
4444
Lovers in the City is Tanita’s fifth album since
her first single was released in 1988, when she
was 18. Now, seven years later, this twenty
something artist has become a force to be reck
oned within the music industry. She has been busy
collaborating with several artists, and was com
missioned by the BBC to set the poetry of Stevie
Smith to music.
Lovers in the City shows her strength as a
vocalist, a musician and a songwriter. The lyrical
content is personal, without exposing her laundry
for everyone to pick through. Her voice is mellow
and deep— similar to k.d. lang’s singing a bal
lad— and full of emotion, like Tori Amos’.
The disc is classy throughout and perfect for a
quiet, post-night-out-on-the-town drive to watch
the sun rise at the beach. Look for it.

I—being a Duran Duran fan—was very ex
cited to see that they were going to release a new
album. When I realized that it was an album of
covers, I was disappointed. Usually songs are not
improved when performed by a group other than
the original, and this album tends to prove it.
sion” is the worst I’ve ever heard, and— talk about
a punch line— Simon LeBon rapping on Public
Enemy’s "911 Is a Joke” is laughable.
The covers are sloppy and, instead of paying
homage to people that have influenced them,
Duran Duran has shown how incredibly narrow
their scope of talent really is. A truly depressing
and low-grade album. Pass it up, and buy the
singles instead. Or, better yet, buy the originals.

The Best o f Broadway
444
It seems as if not too many people my age are
truly interested in Broadway and musicals. That
is, unless you are talking to a room full of theater
students or only talking about Andrew Lloyd
Webber, Stephen Sondheim, or Claude-Michel
Schonberg (creator of Les Misérables and Miss
Saigon).
Musicals have come into direct competition
from the movie screen and video recorders. So, to
compensate, stage sets have become extrava
gant—to the point of being overdone. Each scene
is meant to out-do the previous one in an attempt
to keep the audience glued to the edge of its seats.
This compilation shows the incredible change
that has occurred in the U.S. musical theater over
the last 50 years (since the opening of Oklahoma!
in 1943).
However, nothing connects the drastic changes
in tone and range in this compilation from song to
song. “The Music of the Night” (Phantom o f the
Opera) and “Ease on Down the Road” (The Wiz)
are paired up with the likes of “Strike Up the
Band” (My One and Only) and “Big Spender”
(Sweet Charity). The only bridge linking them is
the simple fact that all of these songs were sung on
Broadway. Which isn’t to say I don’t like them
all—just not together.
Who knows, maybe someone will pick it up,
seeing the songs of Webber, Sondheim and
Schonberg, and listen to and like the classic songs
by Gershwin, Lemer and Loewe, and Rodgers
and Hammerstein. Hmmm. It could be just a plot
to give us twentysomethings some “classic cul
ture.” Oh well, it’s a good album to listen to.

I’ll cut it some slack because it is a follow-up
album. And maybe they were just too tired from
touring way too long after the release of Pablo
Honey.

The first song, “White Lines,” originally per
formed by Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel
(now with Simon LeBon and Grandmaster Flash),
is probably the best song on the album. “Crystal
Ship,” and “Perfect Day” are both good and so is
the second version of “I WannaTake You Higher."
But the album as a whole is a disappointment.
The Duran Duran version of “Ball of Confu-
“My Iron Lung” is a good single, and “Black
Star” is haunting. But the rest only seem to echo
chords from Pablo Honey. This only confirms the
tunnel-vision-like scope of their talent. Pass it up.
