MARYLAND
After two years in the court system, a case
involving the forced HIV testing of a Frederick
County man has been settled. According to the
Baltimore Gay Paper, the man— known as “John
Doe”— was arrested and forced to submit to test
ing in 1992 on the strength of rumors that he was
intentionally exposing others to the HIV virus.
Doe was awarded $75,000 in the judgment, which
also requires the Maryland AIDS Administration
to issue HIV testing guidelines to local health
departments.
“This settlement affirms that it is not neces
sary to trample individual constitutional rights to
protect the public,” stated Nancy Paige, one of
Doe’s two attorneys. Both attorneys see the settle
ment as a major victory for individual rights and
sound public health policy.
MASSACHUSETTS
Organizers of Boston’s annual St. Patrick’s
Day Parade have filed a petition with the U.S.
Supreme Court that would allow them to keep an
Irish gay, lesbian and bisexual group from march
ing in the parade.
According to Bay
W indows, the
Irish American
Gay, Lesbian and
Bisexual Group
of
Boston
^ marched in the
1992 and 1993
parades under
temporary court
orders.
In 1994, the
South Boston
Allied War Vet
erans Council canceled the parade when the state
Supreme Court ruled 4 to 1 in favor of the gay,
lesbian and bisexual group. Attorney for the group,
Mary Bonauto, now has 30 days to file a petition
opposing the veterans’ request.
NEVADA
A white supremacist has pleaded guilty to the
murder of a gay man, William Metz, earlier this
year. According to Bay Windows, Justin Suade
Slotto, 21, stabbed Metz more than 20 times and
said he would have carved a swastika on Metz,
had there been time.
The sentencing hearing has been set for Dec.
6. The hate crime carries a life sentence, either
with or without parole.
PENNSYLVANIA
Earl Genzel, a theater professor at a conserva
tive Christian school in Carlisle, resigned under
pressure after expressing his views of tolerance
for gay men and lesbians, reported Southern Voice.
When asked in class whether gay men should be
priests or accepted into Christian congregations,
Genzel questioned the use of biblical passages “to
condemn gay Christians who are living in mo
nogamous, mutually caring, loving relationships.”
Messiah College officials told Genzel it would
not be “a wise decision” for him to remain at the
school.
TEXAS
The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to hear a
Texas case involving a law prohibiting the sale or
use of dildos, according to The Washington Blade.
The court’s refusal leaves intact a law that baffles
many.
The law was invoked to arrest an adult book
store clerk, Noe Regaldo, who had 17 “toys of
joy” for sale in his Houston shop. State law
prohibits the possession of “obscene devices”
with intent either to sell or “promote” them.
“Encouraging single women to believe that
they need a fake penis should be more comforting
to men than knowing single women don’t need
one at all,” said Lambda Legal Defense and Edu
cation Fund director, Beatrice Dohm.

DNA test results have cleared an Arkansas
parolee of the slayings of two gay men in the town
of Irving, Texas, in August. The test results and
other evidence indicate Edwin Bernard Perkins
was not involved in the deaths of Larry Leggett in
January and Leopoldo "Paul” Quintanilla Jr. in
June.
Perkins is currently being held without bond
in the August stabbing death of another gay man,
Larry David Allen, of Garland.
UTAH
A lesbian student, her partner and her child
have been denied family housing at the Univer
sity of Utah, according to the Baltimore Gay
Paper. The
school’s non
discrimination
policy includes
sexual orienta
tion, but the
housing policy
is to rent only
to
m arried
couples or to
single students
living
with
their children
or with other
UU students.
The stu
dent, Kathy
Kees, said she
and her partner were married in a July 1993
ceremony which the state does not recognize.
According to Norman Chambers, director of the
university’s Auxiliary Services, the school’s hous
ing policy is in line with that of other schools
around the country.
VIRGINIA
In a Ku-Klux-Klan-style attack, two Ports
mouth men burned a cross in the yard of Richard
Wagner, a Jewish gay man. In a report in Our
Own, a Virginia lesbian and gay newspaper,
Wagner said he was awakened that morning by
his dogs barking, and saw the men setting up and
burning the cross.
Wagner had reported a telephoned death threat
a few days earlier, in which he was called a
“motherfucking queer kike.” He is unsure if the
incidents are related. “Let’s just say I’m con
cerned,” he said.

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science
and Technology in Alexandria is the scene of a
battle of wills, reports The Washington Blade.
Every time a poster goes up advertising meetings
of a discussion group which focuses on gay and
lesbian issues, it is defaced or taken down. The
last episode found the word “faggot” scrawled
across the poster after it had been up for one
weekend.
James R. Johnson, the teacher who founded
the group, said he has experienced both support
and bigotry since beginning the meetings. The
school’s principal and the Fairfax superintendent
of schools are supportive of the group.
WISCONSIN
Three men have been charged with disorderly
conduct and battery as a hate crime after verbally
abusing and striking patrons outside a bar in Eau
Claire. According to Bay Windows, prosecutors
stated the three selected their targets because of
their perceived sexual orientation.
In the complaint Steven W. Endle, Rocky P.
Morzenti, and Thomas M. Alley are accused of
making derogatory statements in the bar about
gay men, verbally abusing two men and a woman
as they left the bar, and physically attacking two
men, both of whom sustained injuries.
