O sorio founded the gay group Lam bda in 1978. In recent years, he was president o f the gay organi zation Voz Hum ana (Hum an Voice) and was M exico’s delegate to the Global Network o f People with AIDS and HIV. “W e knew M arco well and will miss him deeply,” said Julie Dorf, executive director o f the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Com m ission. "The international m ovem ent suf fered a big loss with his death.” ▼ T ▼ The Mexican government hosted a skills-build- ing conference for 48 nongovernm ental HIV/ AIDS organizations Oct. 3 to 5 in M exico City. Leaders from groups in most o f M exico’s 31 states attended. “T hey [the N ational A ID S C om m ission, CO NA SID A ] used to think they were not obli gated to support NGOs [nongovernm ental orga nizations],” said Jose Navarro o f AIDS Project Tijuana. “It’s well known that the NGOs in Mexico do a better jo b than the governm ent agencies, which are ju st overpaid bureaucrats. GERM ANY G ay activist V olker Beck, 33, was elected to the G erm an Parliam ent (B undestag) on Oct. 16 by G reen Party voters in Cologne. He prom ptly told several new s services that one o f his priorities will be legalization o f lesbian and gay marriage. “I know gays who make up stories about what they really do on the w eekend because they fear losing their jo b s,” Beck said. "R elationships have collapsed because o f the stress this causes.” B eck says “ som e rig h t-w in g e rs ” in the Bundestag m ay “ w hisper to each other stupid m en’s jo k es when 1 deliver a speech,” but h e’s not w orried about that. "These kinds o f people make fools o f them selves,” he said. In his role with the national group Association o f G ays, B eck spoke from the stage at the Stone wall 25 rally this sum m er in New Y ork City. IN D IA The Delhi organization AIDS Bedbhav Virodhi A ndolan has filed a petition with the Delhi High C ourt challenging the constitutionality o f Penal C ode Section 377, which crim inalizes gay sex, reports the International G ay and Lesbian Human Rights C om m ission.
