B allot Measure Requires state to maintain current education funding ✓ NO This is another extraneous constitutional amendment. The petitioners of this measure want to have their cake and eat it, too. The objective of this measure is to protect funding for schools. Great idea, but not at the expense of every other social service the state provides. This measure would force the state to keep the same education budget it now has, but does not spell out where that money will come from. Vote no, and hope our next governor and Legislature can solve this prob lem. Ballot Legalizes physician-assisted suicide This measure would give terminally ill people the right and the means to choose how and when to end their lives. The right to death with dignity is a very personal thing. It’s nobody’s business but the person who is facing death. Anyone who wants to can figure out ways to end his or her own life. This measure outlines a step-by-step process for doctors and their patients to follow, making the decision a safe and legal option. Vote yes. Ballot M easure 1 7 Requires state prison inmates to work full time Ballot Measure 18 Limits free speech in regard to obscenity and child pornography ✓ NO Yet another constitutional amendment pro posed by Rep. Kevin Mannix that is better suited to the Legislature. It’s a great idea for inmates to work during the day rather than to spend their time twiddling their thumbs in prison cells. Oregon doesn’t need a constitutional amendment to imple ment this. The Legislature can make this happen without cluttering our Constitution. Vote no on 17. Ballot M easure 18 Regulates hunting of bears and cougars ✓ YES 1st Congressional District E lizabeth F urse , Democrat 2nd Congressional District S ue K upillas , Democrat 3rd Congressional District R on W yden , Democrat 4th Congressional District P eter D e F azio , Democrat State ✓ NO This measure is dangerous. It would change the Constitution to ignore the free speech clause in interpreting laws banning obscenity and child pornography. Child pornography is already ille gal. We don’t need to amend the Constitution to ignore one of its most fundamental parts in order to outlaw it. In addition, this measure would allow communities to define and ban obscenity. Taken to extremes, Ballot Measure 19 could ban Just Out in communities that feel that just being a gay man or lesbian is obscene. We’ve heard that before. Vote no. Ballot Measure 8 0 Replaces all taxes with a 2 percent “ equal" tax ✓ NO He’s at it again. The chief petitioner for this measure is none other than Walter Huss, of “Don’t change Union Avenue to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard” fame. He proposes barring all current state and local taxes and replacing them with a 2 percent tax on all transactions or trade of all goods and services. Sounds like the sales tax from hell. The Oregon tax structure needs to be changed, but Ballot Measure 20 isn’t the way to do it. Vote no. Ballot Measure Authorizes bonds for parks ✓ YES Ballot Measure Matches federal funds to build light rail ✓ YES This measure bans using bait to hunt bears and National 5th Congressional District C atherine W ebber , Democrat using dogs to hunt both bears and cougars. These hunting practices are unfair, unsportsmanlike, and unnecessary. Violation of the measure would be a misdemeanor. Frankly, 18 doesn’t go far enough for our anti-hunting sensibilities, but it is a good step in protecting two of Oregon’s trea sures: the black bear and the cougar. Vote yes on Ballot Measure 18.
