ARIZONA
The Chandler Public Library will be keeping
the book Gloria Goes to Gay Pride, by Lesl6a
Newman, in the children’s section of the library,
despite a patron’s complaint. In a letter to the
patron, library director Karen Drake explained the
decision as “consistent with library purpose and
policy,’’ and described the book itself as “tastefully
done and well recommended.”
In the letter, Drake says: “Your daughter may
have pulled the book off the library’s shelf, but you
made the decision not to read it to her—a clear
example of the policy working effectively. Other
parents may have made a different decision, but the
decision was yours and theirs to make, not the
library staffs.”
CALIFORNIA
About 10 gay men and lesbians joined 60 or so
people who demonstrated outside during Gov.
Pete Wilson’s address to the California Republi
can Convention. The demonstration was held in
protest of Wilson’s Sept. 11 veto of AB 2810, the
domestic partner registration bill that had passed
the legislature and needed only the governor’s
signature to become law. Most present carried
signs supporting Wilson’s Democratic challenger,
Kathleen Brown.

A San Diego judge ordered the Boy Scouts to
reinstate an Explorer post leader who was kicked
out of the organization for being gay.
Superior Court Judge Anthony Joseph had ruled
earlier that California’s
law banning discrimina
tion against gay men and
lesbians by employers pre
vented the Scouts, which
he said qualifies as a busi
ness, from expelling El
Cajon Police O fficer
Chuck Merino simply be
cause he is gay.
The new ruling was the next step in the case.
Merino will not return to his post, however, be
cause the earlier ruling is still on appeal.
Merino was expelled from the Scouts in 1992.
FLORIDA
A jury in Largo has acquitted a video store
clerk charged with renting a tape depicting gay
male sex to an undercover detective, according to
the Associated Press. Under state obscenity laws,
Sheila M. Craig, 37, would have faced a maximum
penalty of one year in jail and a $ 1,000 fine had she
been convicted. Defense attorneys said Craig’s
acquittal set an important precedent, since it was
the first time a queer movie had been the subject of
a trial under state laws forbidding the distribution
of obscene material.

Gretchen Chateau of Orlando never expected
to regain custody of her three children when she
went back to court six years after losing them to try
again. But Jefferson County Family Court Judge
Sandra Ross recently ruled that Chateau’s nurtur
ing and stable home is superior to the troubled and
sometimes abusive home of the children’s father,
Fred. Chateau is a lesbian and lives with her lover.
The children—9, 12 and 14— had been living
with their father, who admitted to using harsh
discipline and to having so little furniture that two
of the children were obliged to sleep on the floor.
All three of the children testified they wanted to
live with their mother.

The Governor’s Commission on Gay and Les
bian Youth has produced a report calling on state
health officials to require that all foster parents,
guardians and halfway house personnel be trained
on gay and lesbian issues. According to Bay Win
dows, the purpose of the panel’s 67-page report is
to ensure that people who work with youth are
aware of the risks faced by lesbian and gay teen
agers.
If endorsed by the Executive Office of Health
and Human Services, policies protecting lesbian
and gay youth will be a requirement for licensing
and certification for professional health agencies
and agencies receiving state funds.

Representatives of community centers from
around the country met in New York City this
summer and resolved to form an alliance: the
National Association of Lesbian and Gay Commu
nity Centers. The decision was the centerpiece of
the annual Community Centers Institute, and had
been in the works since the first gathering eight
years ago.
Representatives of centers in California, Min
nesota, Texas and Colorado attended. For informa
tion, contact the Lesbian and Gay Community
Services Center, 208 W 13th St., New York, NY

NORTH CAROLINA
News from Jesse Helms’ home state: The Chapel
Hill-Carborro School Board voted in August to
include sexual orientation in the district’s plans for
diversity education. The new plan affirms the
dignity of lesbians and gay men and calls for
support staff for lesbian and gay students and
families to be included in every school in the
district.
TEXAS
A bailiff in the Dallas County Sheriffs Depart
ment was suspended due to a remark he made
during the trial of a man accused of raping a
lesbian, the Atlanta newspaper Southern Voice
reported. According to the victim, bailiff Robert
Earl Smith told the defendant’s attorney that if he
were on the jury, “I’d only give him 30 days for
raping a lesbian.” Smith later admitted to the
remark. He was suspended for 10 working days
without pay and ordered to undergo sensitivity
training and to give a written apology to the woman.
WISCONSIN
Republican Rep. Steve Gunderson has given an
interview to The Advocate in which he finesses the
issue of actually saying he is gay. In the article,
Gunderson’s “housemate” of 10years, Rob Morris,
comments, “Elements of the gay community have
waged an all-out war on Steve,” in defense of the
congressman’s reluctance. The interview is due
out by the end of September, but an advance copy
of the article was reported on by Congressional
Quarterly.
