Here's a brief look at some unrelated news stories that are mostly queer positive

TIME TO CELEBRATE. The Portland City Council has taken one
more step toward the enactment of civil rights for all persons.
They just passed a resolution that gives unmarried domestic
partners health benefits comparable to those of married em
ployees. Bill Casey, founder of the Oregon chapter of the
Traditional Family Values Coalition, was in the Council cham
bers for the vote, voicing the same old sorry crap that he usually
does. He called the vote a step toward fulfilling the gay agenda.
Well. duh. Does he think we are not going to keep pushing
toward our full and equal civil rights as a people? Not exactly
a covert agenda. Bill.
“REAL MEN” 00 WEAR EARRINGS. The owner of the Cincinnati
Reds has stuck her foot in it again. She was going on about how
only “fruits” wear earrings and so none of her ball players are
allowed to. This gave the Los Angeles Dodgers a chance to
show that “real" men do wear earrings: The whole team took the
field wearing simple gold clip-ons in a home game against the
Reds.
PERPETUAL SISTERS. While we’re on the subject of jewelry, the
Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, who wear lots of it, will be
attending Portland’s lesbian and gay pride celebration this year.
The sisters are an organization dedicated to charity, especially
AIDS care and education. The Seattle chapter will be gracing
us with their presence July 9.
TRIBUTES. The Tony Awards were presented the night of June
12. In many ways, it was a tribute to gay and lesbian performers,
songwriters and directors. As people accepted their awards,
many tributes were given to gay or lesbian lovers. Tony
Kushner dedicated his award for Angels in America to his
brothers and sisters who were at Stonewall. It was wonderful to
have our lives included along with everyone else’s at such a
well-publicized mainstream event.
PUBLIC SIX. Sex in the park may start looking attractive in this
warm weather. The Portland Police will not be doing plain
clothes, sweeps through the parks, but, since public sex is
illegal, they will nail you if they catch you. Also, the men’s
restroom on the 10th floor of the downtown Meier and Frank,
an apparently well-known location for public sex, is under
surveillance. Store security is having men arrested for having
sex there. We are not endorsing nor condemning men for public
sex, just letting you know. However you choose to have sex,
please use condoms and play safe.
