Measure 9 overshadows all the candidate choices people must make.
It speaks to who we are as a people and as a community. Measure 9 is
a moral choice. In a nation struggling to be an ideal, not just a political,
state, the challenge is to be inclusive rather than exclusive. Measure 9
says no and because o f that, we must say No to 9.
No to hatred, no to bigotry, no to divisiveness, no to being the first
and only state to say to some o f its citizens in this day and age — you
stand alone. We will not say this. We will stand together.
We say to the OCA — this is not the Arizona o f Evan Meacham, this
is not the Louisiana o f David Duke — this is Oregon — take your hatred
and fear somewhere else.

I want to second the letter to the editor in
September’s Just Out by Eris DeaArtio (“Broad-
based values”) concerning “single issue orga
nizing by the Left, and the specific need for anti
racist, as well as anti-homophobic and anti-sexist
organizing. Portland, Ore., is the whitest U.S. city
per capita.
Two dozen community groups in the North
west, most in metro Portland, have endorsed the
international Coke boycott against apartheid. The
boycott was initiated by American Friends Ser
vice Committee and is supported by Pan Africanist
Congress and African National Congress. The
Coke boycott has received little attention either in
mainstream or alternative media.
As Republican politicians from George Bush
to Tony Meeker lift government sanctions against
F.W. de Klerk’s racist dictatorship, it is more
important for grassroots sanctions, like the Coke
boycott and the Shell Oil boycott, to put pressure
on Bush and de Klerk to set a timeline for holding
majority-rule elections in South Africa on the
basis of one person, one vote. Mandela couldn’t
vote in his own country 30 years ago before he
went to jail; Mandela and 27 million blacks in
South Africa still cannot vote today.

Update
To the Editor:
At the time I wrote my letter to the editor I was
not aware of the racism workshop offered in
conjunction with the speakers’ bureau training of
the No on Hate organization. This was conducted
by Ann Sweet and Carol Steinel and is designed
to have an impact on people trying to unlearn their
racism.
It is my understanding that the racism work
shop previously mentioned is now being offered
through the No on Hate community meetings as
well as through the speakers’ bureau training, and
I encourage everyone to take advantage of the
opportunity to experience it.

To the Editor:
No on Hate has a secret agenda-and the gay
community is not in its best interest. At a July
speaker training session, the topic of homophobia
was discarded to be replaced by three rambling
hours of anti-racism discussion. The discussion
was biased, flawed, anti-Christian and reeked of
“political correctness” indoctrination. Anyone
disagreeing with “politically correct” views were
scorned and shouted down. What was disguised
as a training session to combat the OCA was
really an opportunity to promote anti-racism train
ing, bash white males, a// of Christianity (indis
criminately) and a predetermined agenda.
This is a war we’re fighting, yet both groups
are too obsessed with bureaucracy and procedure.
They’re too concerned with how many “politi
cally correct” thinking minorities and castle-build
ing egoists they have on their propagating com
mittees.
Before giving money or human resources to
these groups, take a very close look and see how
these groups are using resources. Why are they
taking in money and not spending it on a massive
media campaign? I smell a scam! Perhaps No on
Hate and No on 9 should get their heads and egos
out of the clouds, get with the program and start
serving the lavender community, instead of serv
ing themselves.

Needless to say we left after one drink and will be
very slow to return.
I am a native o f the state o f Georgia. I know
what this flag stands for. If you insist on flying a
confederate flag, why not add swastikas and hand
out white sheets at the door, affirming this evil
that you so apparently support? I am disgusted
and disappointed to have to confront this crap in
a community that has never needed togetherness
before as much as yours does now. Stop it!

we had a wonderful time. My pleasant memories
of said weekend were maned somewhat by the

At the recent Pride o f Portland Sports Festival
I was honored as the 1992 recipient of the Richard
E. Brown Memorial Award. Richard Brown was
an individual from our community who envi
sioned a program of sports providing entertain
ment for our community. He organized Team
Portland in preparation for Gay Games.
While bowling events have received their share
of notoriety and awards over the years, this is the
first time I have been honored directly for my
involvement or leadership.
I wish to thank the committee members for
honoring me and to thank our community for
allowing me the opportunity and environment in
which to promote our bowling association to
continued success. We are the largest bowling
league in Oregon, straight or gay!
I encourage community members to check out
the sports program o f your choice and get in
volved. You’ll meet new friends, learn new ideas
and broaden your horizons.

in the September issue of Just Out, I urge each and
every one of you to get a copy and read that
editorial. If you have read the editorial, I encour
age you to reread it. Pattie makes some excellent
points about intolerance and horizontal hostility
within our community. Come on folks, let sget
over ourselves and start working together. Only
by working together will we get through this
mess.
