Float gets award
The 1990 Portland Rose Festival
Association Starlight Parade awarded the
Queen’s Award to the float entered by the
Lesbian and Gay Coalition of Oregon. The
award was for the best illuminated float in the
non-commercial category.
The lesbian and gay float is the only gay-
identified float in any mainstream parade in
the United States. This is the second year that
the coalition has had an entry in the Starlight
Parade.
A display of color and lights, highlighted
by a magnificent floral display and nine
smaller arrangements was the design accepted
for the entry. A parade judge commented that
it was by far the most dazzling light display in
the entire parade.

for gay-bashing
The Metropolitan Human Relations
Commission is responding to a report released
today by the National Gay and Lesbian Task
Force documenting 7,031 incidents ranging
from harassment to homicide across the
United States. Of the 1989 total, the MHRC
reported 17 of these incidents. The incidents
occurred in Multnomah County and were
directed against individuals because they are
lesbian or gay or perceived to be so.
The commission maintains that the
reported incidents are low compared to the
actual number of incidents which occur.
When an individual is harassed,
intimidated or assaulted, it is important they
report it. This can be done anonymously
through Loren Christenson, 248-4106 in the
Portland Police Department or the
Metropolitan Human Relations Commission,
796-5136.
Lending library transferred
The lending library from A Woman’s
Place Bookstore has been acquired by Ladd’s
Editions Bookstore. They will continue to
provide that service as well as the community
bulletin board.
Ladd’s Edition is owned by women and
has been in business for one year. They have
made a commitment to provide community
outreach to address racism through workshops
and books to increase awareness of race and
equality.

The new name is Oregon AIDS Food
Bank/Eslher’s Pantry. Their new address is
314 NW Glisan, 97209, phone 273-0711. It is
open Tuesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

would recreate its identity in the community.
Esther’s Pantry was established in 1985 and
the first location was in the basement of the
Embers. Because it was growing and needed
more space, the next move was to the House
of Light. As of June of this year, the board of
Esther’s Pantry decided to be on their own
and to let everyone know that they are not part
of Cascade AIDS Project, the House of Light
or the Blinker Fund.
In the first year, Esther’s Pantry spent a
little over $1000. This past year the budget
exceeded $26,000.
Neo-nazi residence picketed
More than 35 human rights activists
gathered outside a residence at the intersection
of SE 50th and Hawthorne in the early
morning hours of Tuesday, June 12, to expose
neo-nazis living there. Demonstrators chanted,
leafleted the neighborhood, and spoke with
area residents to highlight the continuing
threat of organized racist, homophobic and
religious bigotry. The apartment picketed had
been a gathering spot for neo-fascist youth for
some time. One small business owner, who
identified himself as a supporter of the anti
racist movement, gave an on-camera
interview in which he indicated that the neo-
nazis repeatedly harassed Asian tenants.

Mapplethorpe’s will assures
help in AIDS research
The estate of the late photographer Robert
Mapplethorpe donated $250,000 to the
American Foundation for AIDS Research
(AmFAR).
When he died of AIDS in 1989,
Mapplethorpe established a foundation
dedicated to promoting AIDS research and the
careers of young US photographers. Part of
his estate will now go to AmFAR, the nation’s
leading private organization dedicated to
developing treatments for HIV disease.

Festival says “no” to NEA

turned-down a $49,500 grant and have stated
that unless current restrictions on funding are
removed, they will reject the $225,000 grant
for major improvements to the outdoor
