JoAnn Loulan returns
to Portland
JoAnn Loulan, a nationally known
psychotherapist, sex educator, author and
researcher, returns to Portland on February 24
with her Evening of Provocative Humor and
Lesbian Sex Education. Lou Ian’s appearance
will be at the Northwest Service Center on
Saturday, February 24 at 8 pm. Loulan
specializes in the sexual and emotional
concerns of lesbians. She brought 700 women
to their feet at her last performance in
Portland.
Loulan’s workshop. Sex and Intimacy in
Recovery, is a day long workshop for lesbians
recovering from addictive substances and
behaviors. The workshop will be held on
Sunday, February 25, also at the Northwest
Service Center. Recovery is a self-defined
term and does not mean participation in a 12-
step program. Topics to be covered include:
co-dependency, sex and love addiction;
alcohol and substance abuse issues; is this
sobriety or just plain boredom?; singles,
dating and AIDS.
Lo ulan’s appearance partially benefits A

lecture are $10 in advance and $12 at the door

Team Portland forges ahead
Team Portland is well on its way toward
the goal of registering at least 100 athletes for
the Celebration 90 — Gay Games HI, in
Vancouver, B.C. Over 50 gay men and
lesbians have completed the registration
process for a wide variety of sports, including
tennis, track and field, racquetball, basketball,
softball, weight lifting, physique, marathon,
triathlon, volleyball, swimming, bowling, and
cioquet. Those interested in registering have
until May 31 to do so.
Team Portland has also formed a swim
team which is holding regular practice
sessions on Sunday mornings from 9 a.m. to
11 a.m. at the downtown YWCA. The team is
open to all levels of swimmers regardless of
previous competitive experience. The team is
also actively looking for a qualified swim
coach who can organize the team and prepare
it for competition in Vancouver. Interested

The Team Portland tennis team is holding
regular practice sessions Sunday afternoons at
the University of Portland. The team is
seeking female players so as to be able to
compete in all of the events available. Players
of all levels are encouraged to turn out. The
tennis team is also seeking a qualified coach.

Other team sports are forming and will be
announcing practice schedules soon. Team
Portland representatives can place individuals
desiring to participate in various team sports

Team Portland T-shirts are now available
for purchase from any Team Portland Steering
Committee member, at the Phoenix Rising
offices, on weekends at CC Slaughters and
The Eagle. The $10 purchase price will help
defray administrative costs of managing Team
Portland and go toward the purchase of team
uniforms. T-shirts are also available at

International Women’s Day
events set
The 15th annual International Women’s
Day Celebration will be held on March 10, at
Portland State University, Smith Memorial
Center, from 10 am to 5 pm. Day activities
include: food, film, performances, arts and
crafts and women’s organizations. The
political forum at noon will examine the
impact and implications of pornography and
prostitution on women’s lives. The evening
activities include performances by Altazor
and Casselberry-Dupree. Admission to day
activities is $2 or sliding scale. The evening
performance tickets are $12 and are available
through A Woman’s Place Bookstore,
Artichoke Music, and Portland State
University Box Office.
International Women’s Day celebrates
cultural diversity, women’s history, art, and
political struggle.

The Planning Committee is committed to
cultural diversity and encourage women from
all ethnic, racial cultures and abilities to
participate in the event. International
Women’s Day is wheelchair accessible, and
interpretation for the hearing impaired will be
provided, as well as free quality childcare.
St. John to Speak at
Atlanta Conference
representatives of local, regional and national
lesbian and gay organizations.
Among the more than 30 presenters at the
Conference will be Sabrina Sojourner of
Etcetera, A. William S. Jones of the National
Minority AIDS Council, the Rev. Renee
McCoy of Faith Church in Detroit, Barbara
Smith of Kitchen Table Press and Rev. Carl
Bean of Unity Fellowship Church in Los
Angeles.
There has been considerable outreach
conducted to make the final program as
diverse as possible in the topics presented and
to have the roster as geographically
representative of the entire country.
The Conference, which took place in Los
Angeles the past two years, is being
sponsored by the Black Gay and Lesbian
Leadership Forum and is being hosted in
Atlanta by the African-American Lesbian and
Gay Alliance.

Lesbian Visibility Project
Keith St. John, the nation’s first openly
gay Black elected official, will be a keynote
speaker at the third annual National Black
Gay and Lesbian Leadership Conference. The
Conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency
Peachtree Plaza in Atlanta, February 16-19.
St. John joins other leaders from across the
country for four days of workshops,
receptions, cultural activities, a Health
Institute and the second annual Leadership
Rountable.
The Health Institute, in addition to its
annual offering of the latest in expertise for
health care providers in the AIDS field, will
be expanded this year to include special areas
o f concentration on health issues for women
and on chemical dependency. The Leadership
Roundtable is a half-day strategy session for

Now is the time to get involved. First on the
agenda is recruiting new members o f the
Lesbian Community Project and forging a
commitment to reflect as much of the diver
sity of the community as possible. Secondly,
after reviewing the positives and negatives of
last year’s campaign, the course for the new
campaign will be charted.

ing both the message and the method. All
