Living in Leather TV conference at Coliseum CONFIDENTIAL PRESCRIPTIONS DELIVERED TO YOUR HOME The fourth Living in Leather Conference, the annual convention of the National Leather Association, will convene at the Portland Memorial Coliseum October 6-9. More than 600 leather and S/M people of all sexual orientations and types are expected to attend the conference. Registration will begin at 4 pm, Friday, October 6, at Inn at the Coliseum, 10 N. Weidler, and continue after 10 am on Saturday at the Coliseum North Wing Assembly Hall area. Inn at the Coliseum will also be the site of 12-step programs, Wiccan gatherings, Portland Power and Trust open house, and PWA/HIV+ support groups. For conference participants, more than 20 workshops on such topics as Kinky and Non- Gay, Permanent Body Decoration, Erotic Literature and Censorship, Second Coming Out and a Bloodsport Discussion, will be presented on Saturday and Sunday. Dungeon parties, a fundraiser for Mr. and Ms. NLA’s travel funds, and the Blackout Ball will be open to conferees and the public on all three days of the conference. Stephanie Holloway, Executive Direc tor of Phoenix Rising, is pleased to announce the September 25 arrival of Jim M. Everett, newly hired Clinical Director. “Jim’s exten sive counseling experience will be a great asset for the agency,” Holloway said. Everett most recently served as a clinical social work er with the Health Key Medical Group in St Louis, Missouri and a part-time contract counselor with a Belleville, Illinois United Way agency. His volunteer work includes serving as a member of the St. Clair County AIDS Task Force and a volunteer psychotherapist for Metro East Health Agency AIDS patients. “In addition to developing and supervising our clinical program and carrying a caseload of individual and group clients, Jim’s first major project will be the completion of the certification process for the agency. This will allow Phoenix Rising to serve more clients by allowing us to accept insurance and other third party payments,” Holloway said. Phoenix Rising is a service center promoting wellness and the common interests of lesbians and gay men through professional counseling, information and referral, educational programs and social activities. The two pre vious Gay Games convened in San Francisco and attracted thousands of athletes and artists from all over the world. Organizers in Vancouver anticipate that participants in Gay Games m and Cultural Festival will far exceed the games in 1982 and 1986. Confirmed sporting events for Gay Games III include badminton, basketball, bowling, billiards, croquet, cycling, darts, diving, equestrian, golf, ice hockey, marathon, martial arts, physique, powerlifting, squash, racquet- ball, soccer, softball (fast and slow pitch), swimming, tennis, touch football, track and field, triathalon, volleyball, water polo and wrestling. Cultural events are still in the planning stages, but confirmed events include opening and closing ceremonies, fantasy ball, film festival. Dance Across America, Night of a Thousand Voices, literary festival, women's cultural event, theater festival, and band concerts. Gay Games HI organizers in Portland are hoping that Oregon will be represented by a large contingent of athletes and artists from around the state. Rose scholarships awarded The Pride of the Rose Scholarship has awarded $15,000 over ten years to 19 lesbians and gay men to help them continue their education beyond secondary school. This year's awards were recently announced at Sandra Dee’s Turnabout Show at Darcelle XV. The two recipients, Nam Hoang and Helen Lottridge, each received a $750 scholarship. Nam Hoang, from Viet Nam, came to the United States in 1979 and received a Bachelor of Arts from Reed College. He is now pursuing a Master of Science in math and computer science at PSU. Helen Lottridge, previously the director of Phoenix Rising is now studying for a degree in computer programming and analysis at PCC. The Pride of the Rose Scholarship was founded in 1979 by Emperor V Frank and Empress XXI Allison Grey. Little did they know that the tradition would last so long. The annual scholarship is co-administered by Phoenix Rising and this year’s major contri butors were Portland's Imperial Rose Court, Jimi Dee, Dora Jar and Sanford Director. — Littlejohn Keogh Leadership forum slated A Leadership Forum for lesbian and gay individuals and organizations has been planned for Monday, October 30,1989 at 7:30 pm at the Northwest Service Center’s Community Service Room, 1819 NW Everett. In response to interest for leadership sharing and skills development within the lesbian and gay community, the Leadership Forum has been informally coordinated as a quarterly networking meeting of interested individuals and organizational representatives. A needs survey and resource survey are being mailed in advance to community organizations to allow discussion at the October 30 meeting of areas for future skills building, networking and community prioritizing and strategizing.
