Steven Edward Funderburk, 1959-1989 e is part of the eternity that is the ocean now. Not yet 30, Funderburk died of AIDS April 7 in his Northwest Portland home. His survivors included his twin sister and a loving companion, Ben. Steven’s ashes were scattered on the Pacific at the mouth of Siletz Bay in a private oceanside service on April 12. The toil continues, and constantly reminds us that there is so much we have to do in this short lifetime. Dominos Pizza, Ralston Purina and General Mills all bailed out of “ Saturday Night Live” after consumer groups pelted them with com plaints about SNL skits (including one that repeatedly used the word “ penis” ). And, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defama tion has asserted that Mennon ended its adver tising on “ Heartbeat” after pressure groups objected because the series included a lesbian nurse. "Heartbeat.” a medical drama, is now off the air. The group behind most of this activity is the American Family Association, a Tupelo, MS • group headed by the Reverend Donald E. Wild- mon. Wildmon says that “ more and more cor porations are beginning to say no to the exploitive and anti Christian programming of the networks. C Mr. Wildmon, in a letter to his followers, expressed incredulity that ABC would intro duce a lesbian character “ at a time when AIDS is killing thousands of homosexuals.” Mr. Wildmon’s incredible ramblings reach an estimated 380,000 readers. Bring Gay Pride back to Stark Street efore the parade organizers and politicians got involved, gay pride had its own life in the bars. After all, that’s where it all started in this country . . . a bar full of drag queens getting harassed by the local cops one time too many. The rest is history. Well, maybe this year we can get the bars involved in a little more than extended happy hours. Flossies (AKA Silverado) could be in a unique situation to barricade a portion of upper Stark Street on Gay Pride Weekend for an old- fashioned street celebration. Sources say when Jake’s asked for a street vacation to expand their overflow St. Patrick’s Day hoopla, the Flossie folks across the street said “ OK,” as long as the Silverado could do the same during Gay Pride. Well, let’s get with it. A small band, a few portable bars, a dance floor and voila!, we’ve brought a little Gay Pride back to Stark Street. B Enchanted Blue Wave Ltd. Fa Pnc e s - Oregon firms make medical news eaverton’s Epitope, Inc., has announced completion of pre-clinical trials on its rapid saliva-based AIDS test. And in Portland, Bioject, Inc., is gearing up for production of the world's first needleless hypodermic injection system. Epitope expects to begin clinical trials of its AIDS test in the third quarter of 1989 The new test uses saliva to detect within 10 minutes presence of human immunodeficiency virus antibodies. Bioject’s “ Star Trek” needleless injection system is a carbon dioxide-powered unit about the size of a flashlight. On another medical note, a Nobel Laureate says some members of the medical profession have become hysterical in their reaction to AIDS — a disease he calls “ the least infec tious disease of man that I have ever heard o f.” Those remarks were made by Dr. D. Carle- ton Gajdusek. speaking at Linfield College in Portland this past month. Dr. Gajdusek said doctors really don’t need masks, gloves, and gowns when working around AIDS patients under normal circumstances. w ROLFING “A Magical Oceanfront Retreat" A Bed and Breakfast For Women B g s q u ir e 226 6 1853 SW Jefferson, Portland.
