Lesbian and Gay Pride 1989 plans underway Adopting the international theme "Stonewall — 20 years. A Generation of Pride,” Lesbian and Gay Pride. Inc. announces formation of planning committees for the annual celebration to be held this year on Saturday. June 17. Last year's celebration attracted more than 5.000 participants. Inc. member Stewart Jolliffe. “ Help is needed with the planning of the traditional march and rally, security, fund raising. the program and advertisement sales in the program as well as production of the program itself.” Planning meetings are held the first and third Tuesdays of every month, from 6:30-8:45 pm, at the Main Library, 801 SW 10th Avenue. Courage to heal survivors workshop slated A day-long workshop for non-perpetrating women survivors of child sexual abuse will be held on Sunday, April 23, from 10 am to 5 pm, at the Main Library. 801 SW 10th Avenue. For more information, call 232-8233. Laura Davis, co-author of the ground breaking book, The Courage to Heal: A guide fo r women survivors o f child sexual abuse. Through lecture and small group discussion, Davis teaches survivors about the healing pro cess and helps them build bonds with other survivors. With warmth, humor and clarity, Davis offers information and hope to women struggling to reclaim their lives. Registration is limited. Tickets (sliding scale from $50-75) are available at A Woman's Place Bookstore and Catbird Seat Bookstore. The Courage to Heal Survivors Workshop will benefit the Portland Women’s Crisis Line. Casino Royale benefit The Imperial Sovereign Rose Court of Oregon will present an evening of gaming and entertainment. “ Casino Royale, an Evening at the Crystal Palace,'' will be held on April 16 at 6 pm at the back room of The Embers in Portland. The gaming portion of the evening will include blackjack, roulette, and craps with the prizes being donated by many Oregon businesses, such as getaways to some of our wonderful bed and breakfast places on the Ore gon coast. The entertainment will feature live cabaret style performances by local talent. The profits of the evening will be shared by two local charities, A Woman’s Place Book store and the Brinker Fund. A Woman’s Place Bookstore is a cooperative bookstore featuring the best selection of information on women’s issues and many gay and lesbian books in the area. The Brinker Fund is an organization founded in memory of Portland's 24-Karat Gold Empress Esther Hoffman Howard also known as Chester Brinker. The fund gives direct support to persons with AIDS. All this fun and purpose can be enjoyed for the price of only $10 per person in advance. Advance tickets can be purchased at A Woman’s Place Bookstore, 1431 NE Broadway, and at The Embers, 110 NW Broadway. The price of the tickets includes $25.00 of gaming dollars. Each play is $5.00 in gaming dollars. We encourage everyone to try their luck and skill to help benefit these two worthy charities. Tickets will also be available at the door. Sign on for choice Janet Bauer will carry a big sign as she marches for reproductive rights in Washington, DC , on April 9. Bauer wants the sign she carries in the March for Women’s Lives/Women’s Equality to be filled with the names of others who cannot make the trip to Washington. Bauer will also deliver letters to the US Supreme Court, which will be hearing oral arguments in a case that may overturn Roe v. Wade later in the month. The Court has agreed to hear Webster v. Reproductive Health Services, which challenges a Missouri law severely limiting a woman's right to an abortion. To place a name on Bauer’s sign, call her at 239-0944. Support, personal growth groups forming As part of its commitment to promote well ness and the common interests of lesbians and gay men, Phoenix Rising announces the form ing of spring support and personal growth groups. Groups generally meet for six to eight weeks. Reasonable fees are charged or a sliding scale is used. For registration or additional information, call Phoenix Rising at 223-8299. Phoenix Rising also provides individual, couple, family and group counseling for any issue including relationships. HIV disease, adult children of alcoholics, co-dependency, childhood sexual/physical abuse, domestic violence, parenting, coming out, self-esteem, and depression. Phoenix Rising is a member agency of United Way and is also funded through fees for service, contributions, grants and in-kind gifts. From All Walks of Life graphic contest A contest to choose graphics for the third annual pledge walk to benefit AIDS care and education — From All Walks of Life ’89 — will continue to accept designs until May 1. The chosen design will be used for posters, brochures and T-shirts for the Walk, which will take place on September 10. From All Walks of Life raises money for the Cascade AIDS Project’s direct services and education. In 1988, more than 1400 walkers raised $113,000. From the Margins to the Main stream Project A float in the Portland Rose Festival's Starlight Parade. A prominent national lesbian or gay speaker at the Portland City Club during Lesbian and Gay Pride Week. These are but two activities being undertaken by the Lesbian Community Project’s public awareness cam paign, From the Margins to the Mainstream Project. Also on the Project’s agenda are plans to raise $45,000 to finance multimedia and direct mail campaigns in the Portland metro politan area. LCP founder joins Bridgetown Realty Cathy Siemens, a founder of the Lesbian Community Project and former deputy campaign manager for the NO on 8 Ballot Measure Campaign joined Bridgetown Realty as a sales associate in March. Focusing on residential property, Siemens said she will continue to serve the lesbian and gay community, " I see my work at Bridgetown as a continuation of my commitment to this community. Helping people to buy or sell a home is a valuable service that I hope to provide with integrity, sensitivity, and professionalism.” She also added, "The flexible hours will allow me to continue working on a variety o f projects such as the positive image lesbian awareness campaign, "M argins to the Mainstream." POWELLS TRAVEL STORE New gay and lesbian bowling league An organizational meeting for a new gay and lesbian bowling league will be held on April 19 at 7 pm at Pro 300 Lanes, 3031 SE Powell. The new Wednesday night bowling league will begin bowling in mid-May and will continue for 12-14 weeks, according to Rich Knittle, one of the organizers of the league. The league will be ABC/WIBC sanctioned to give bowlers eligibility for city, state, and national bowling events. Persons may join the league as individual bowlers or in teams of four. Cost of the league play will be $6 per person per week. Success of the new league will lead to a winter league in the fall.
