Bridgetown Realty
really worked for us
To the Kditor:
We needed to sell our house at the first of the
year. O f course, being independent “ I-can-do-
it-myself" women, we started out trying to find
a buyer, but soon realized it would take more
time than either of us had. So, feeling defeated,
we listed it with Bridgetown Realty. They
immediately had open houses, listed it with
Mutliple Listing, and all the other stuff that
realtors do. And in a little over a month, our
house was sold and at a price that covered their
fee. so we ended up with what we wanted
anyway.
On the way to work this morning, after sign
ing all the final papers, I had such a great
feeling, knowing that the house was sold at a
good price, but mostly that our entire dealings
had been handled in such a professional way. I
knew that our realtor. Deborah Betron in this
case, was paying attention to all the details, and
that she was looking after our best interests at
every step in the process. I couldn’t be more
pleased with how this transaction was handled.
My point is that we do have very professional
people in many fields in our community —
doctors, lawyers, travel agents, florists.
dentists, auto mechanics, etc. Use them! Look
in the classifieds of Just Out when you need a
new service. Support gay and lesbian businesses
whenever you can. And gay and lesbian busi
ness people: COME OUT! Let us know who
and where you are. Our community will be
stronger for us all.
And thank you, Deborah, fordoing such a
great job for us!

Civil disobedience
To the Editor:
I am one of the “ Burnside 18.” and also one
of the "M inus 2.” I pleaded guilty to the
charge of “ improper placement on highway,”
not because 1 was going out of town (an
erroneous assumption voiced by Emilie Simon
at the trial of the other 16 protesters), but
because 1 felt that to plead otherwise would be
to detract from the credibility of the statement 1
made by blocking the Burnside Bridge.
When I appeared in court. I explained to the
judge that, although the other 16 protesters had
chosen to plead “ not guilty," I had chosen to
Susan
Kate
plead “ guilty" for the above-stated reason. He
asked why I had been “ improperly placed" on
Burnside, and 1 explained that I had been
involved in civil disobedience to protest the
passage of Ballot Measure 8. He recalled the
incident. He then graciously accepted my plea
o f “ guilty." and in deference to my "concerns
in the matter." he dismissed the charges.
In my understanding, civil disobedience is an
act of willfully breaking a law to call attention to
an injustice. The passage of Ballot Measure 8
was an injustice. We blocked the Burnside
Bridge to call attention to this injustice. I felt it
necessary to plead "guilty” in order to main
tain the significance of my action. To plead
"not guilty” would be to miss the point of the
civil disobedience. To be unwilling to accept the
consequences o f a willingly chosen action is to
make that action inconsequential.
