oann Loulan brought over 700 women to
their feet at the climax of an arousing,
humorous, and moving two hour performance
at the Northwest Service Center. Loulan bills
her evenings with audiences as ‘ “An Evening of
Provocative Comedy and Lesbian Sex Educa
tion." Judging from the audience's response,
both have been sorely needed in this community.
Loulan discussed issues so personal that most
women have never mentioned them aloud —
much less to an audience of 700! She also
demonstrated safe sex, to the delight of the
audience, as well as the volunteer from the
crowd.
She used her newly created terms, LIP, MIP,
and HIP to describe the various stages of love
relationships, beginning with the Lesbian
Insanity Period, followed by the Moving In
Period, and finishing with the Healing In
Period.
Throughout the evening she brought tears to
women’s eyes with her descriptions of the hurt
ful experiences brought on by homophobia, and
helped the audience to heal the hurt by facing
internalized oppression head-on. She told of her

own experience of coming out to the people at
her bus stop when she was selected to appear on
the Oprah Winfrey show. To her surprise, her
new neighbors were not only accepting of her,
but have become fast friends. She feels that
lesbians are the most invisible members of our
society, and the only way this will change is by
purposely becoming more visible. She
encouraged women to take their love to the
streets, making public affection so common
that people no longer take offense.
Her research shows that lesbian couples
experience a sharp drop in frequency of sex
after the first year (respondents were white
women from 30-45 years of age), again after the
second year, and by the end of the third year sex
has become rare. At the same time, respondents
reported they were satisfied with their sex lives.
Loulan believes this infrequency of sex is due to
internalized oppression, and that women should
enjoy fuller sex lives as a matter of course.
While 38 percent of her respondents reported
they had been sexually molested before the age
o f 18, this is the same percentage reported in the
heterosexual population, and no reason not to
enjoy lesbian sex.
Her theory that adults use their internal teen

agers to protect their internal children was both
amusing and poignant. She encouraged women
to stop making each other wrong, to stop trying
so hard to prove ourselves right, and to just love
each other with all our faults and foibles. She
also suggested we try a little harder to meet the
other woman’s expectations (as in putting
albums back in their covers after use, and clean
ing hair out of the sink).
Loulan’s humor was, indeed, provocative
and she provided more than a little education on
the topic of lesbian sex. She attempted to
include all women of all colors, ages, and
physical abilities, and slipped only a bit in her
portrayal of Portland teenagers. Her use of the

Otherwise, her performance was flawless.
