Let’s flush out the hate-mongers! t’s election morning in downtown Portland and the wind whips up in a comer of a transit shelter on Fifth Avenue. Flipping end over end is a little flyer with the picture of a young child on the front cover. That seemingly innocuous piece of literature was one reason why a majority of voters flipped the “ YES” lever for Ballot Measure 8 in the recent election. With a title “ Your Kids Are Targets Of Gay Rights Fanatics,” the flyer stands as one of the most hate-mongering articles to hit the streets since Adolf Hitler fanned hatred of Jews in the late 1930s. I m m a K ttm - » ■ ■ ■ • • • B etw een th e L i n e s . . . B Y J A C K R I L E Y Here are a few excerpts from this widely circulated pamphlet which tangled civil rights with every other issue known to man. On the issue of Gays as adoptive parents: “ What would a little child, already subjected to child abuse, feel as he lay in bed on his first night in his foster parents’ house, listening to the orgiastic hollering of the two men who sleep together in the next room?” “ . . . how will your child feel when the boys-in-the-band drop by for some drugs and ‘poppers’ (Poppers are small cannisters of amyl nitrate inserted up the rectum to relax the sphincter muscle)?" “ Gays and lesbians lie about statistics when it comes to child molestation. They insist that 98 percent of all child molesters are heterosexual men, and that lets them off the hook . . . homosexuals probably constitute one-half of all recorded molestations of children.” On Governor Goldschmidt’s executive order: “ Portland's streets are packed every night with street kids, boys, selling their young bodies to survive — to homosexuals. It is doubtful that many women pay these kids to have intercourse with them. Will Goldschmidt grant those despicable johns special rights too?” “ Dump Goldschmidt in the next election, and vote out the . . . entrenched cronies and anyone else who hates kids. No one who loves children could possibly sell them down the river for the sake of a $ 1,000 contribution from the gay PAC.” Believe me, these examples are the less volatile, but, at least, most coherent of the remarks made in that flyer. It was published by the P.L. Media Center, Box 816, Newberg, Oregon. And if I may borrow a tactic from Oregonian columnist Phil Stanford, let’s flush out these bigots who wrote those remarks. Here’s twenty bucks to the first person who can give me a name behind this group. We’ll keep you posted in next month’s column. 1989 AIDS media campaign targets four major ‘groups’ espite falling on its face during its first. much ballyhooed, AIDS advertising campaign for the state, the Portland ad agency Turtledove Clemens is about to roll out another attempt for the new year. If you remember, the last campaign for the state Health Division included print advertising that was unacceptable to several major news papers, including the Oregonian, several radio and TV stations. And one transit ad, prompted a minor uproar over the sight of two men embracing. Well, the new ads will not promote the use of condoms, nor will they mention ‘gays’ or ‘homosexuals,’ perse. Instead, the targets will be men who have sex with other men, intra venous drug users, racial and ethnic groups, and teenagers with lifestyles that put them at risk of contracting AIDS. The new campaign was developed after the ad firm held extensive meetings with representatives of the gay community, minority groups, and newspaper and broadcast reps. Somehow the agency, which went through a million bucks the last time, found time to do some basic research. Some in the gay community generally felt that the last round of AIDS advertising created public hysteria that resulted in a backlash against gays. Leonard Lanfranco, executive director of the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association, praised the Health Division for giving publishers a selection of ads from which to choose. “ Publishers have a sense of their com munity, and what flies in one city, may not fly in another,” he told UP1. “ That is why the free dom to pick and choose is necessary.” Let’s hope Oregonian editor Bill Hilliard can find some ads that will “ fly” in Portland. mwiw u n iimiiwuHHimwimHminmiwiiimimmn RSVP D Psychological Services for Women, Men, and Couples 1989 Cruises A Cruise To Remember ’89 F e b .18-25, 1989 M arch 25-A p ril 1, 1989 A pril 1-8, 1989 K r is t in e L . The Skinheads have been directly linked to 18 reported violent attacks on minorities (if you are gay, include yourself) in recent months. It’s a marvel that such a small group has managed to get away with so much terror in so little time. One caution: These goons with their shaved heads, military jackets, and work boots have made it very clear that they share the old Nazi hatred toward homosexuals. If you should encounter a group of these coneheads, don't waste any time in putting some distance between you and them. But do take notes if they should even verbally harass you. And then contact the Portland Police Bureau detectives investigating the group. Having some homophobic high school kid from Hillsboro take a swing at you is one thing, but these skinheads are not out to hurt you; they want to kill you.
