n his preface to A Lou Harrison Reader,
published last spring, Peter Garland wrote,
“ At age 70, Lou Harrison is at the forefront,
with the young people, and in command of an
astonishingly broad and mature musical voice.
His work, like that of only a few others, stands
alone and defines a whole new (or timeless)
world of musical possibilities. And his life has
exemplified this expanded awareness and re
sponsibility: That one’s responsibility to place
and historical tradition — musically, culturally
and politically — is likewise one’s responsi
bility to the planet.”
The Portland Gay Men’s Chorus will perform
the first full production of Harrison’s opera,
Young Caesar, on April 9 and 10 at the Portland
Center for the Performing Arts.

andra De Helen (left) and Kathay Duff
discuss a favorite topic for both: theater,
in particular the Portland Women’s Theatre
Company’s new production of Jane Chambers’s
Last Summer at Bluefish Cove. The play runs
from April 15 through June 4.
Now in its eighth year and in its own space,
the Portland Women’s Theatre Company con
tinues to expand its horizons.
