Other lobby features include a gas/wood fire place that offers a cozy atmosphere on damp Oregon evenings; a central box office that hand les ticketing for all of the facilities managed by the Portland Center for the Performing Arts; and The Back Stage Club, a 75-seat restaurant which will be open every evening for before and after theatre meals. Highlights of the opening celebration include The Portland Gay Men’s Chorus, September 5, Saturday, 8 p.m ., Intermediate Theatre, $7, $10, $12. Rousing songs of the sea, show stopping Broadway tunes and the world premier o f “ Festival” by renowned Northwest com poser Tomas Svoboda are included in this con cert o f joyous, celebratory music. Svoboda’s composition, taken from a Japanese poem, is jaunty and humorous, with complicated rhythms, dissonances and memorable melodies. This work was commissioned by the Chorus for its debut performance in the Intermediate Theatre. Intimate Friends, September 17, 18, 19, 20 and September 25, 26, 27 at 8:00 pm. _ Delores WinningstadTheatre, $12.50 (Gala Benefit, Sept. 17 for Phoenix Rising Founda tion, $20.00) Intimate Friends is a musical revue, tagged a “ celebration o f gay and lesbian lifestyle.” Twenty-four songs, six performers, three musi cians, and a stylish, almost whimsical set form the elements o f this rich and varied exploration o f what it means to be gay today. The show is a production o f gay theater which explicity states that there are, in fact, gays on and off stage. Intimate Friends is just great theater. • Clockwise from top left.
