Lesbian Community Project Update
Hot summer in the city
Members elect new board
The LCP membership drive is a smash­
ing success! We are now 400 members
strong, and have voted for and installed
our Board of Directors. The function of the
new board is to approve policy and set
long-range goals for the organization.

LCP’s new Board of Directors met for
the First time June 7th for an all-day orien­
tation at Good Samaritan Hospital’s con­
ference room. It was an opportunity for
new board members to meet one another
and become acquainted with LCP history,
organizational structure, current project
commitments, and the legal responsibili­
ties of the Board. New board members
were invited to share ideas for future pro­
jects and participated in a well-planned
and stimulating exercise about decision­
making powers that resulted in actual pol­
icy being set. The steering committee was
elected and set their First ofFicial meeting
Rock n’ Roll Dance Party
featuring the Blues Sisters and
other womens’ bands will take
place July 18th in the evening at Echo
Theater located at 1515 S.E. 37th.
Admission $5.00 all ages welcome. Al­
cohol and non-alcohol beverages will be
available.

for June 23rd. OfFicers will have been
selected by publication date and include a
chairperson, vice-chairperson, treasurer,
and secretary. An all Board retreat is plan­
ned for September 12-13th. The day was
well-planned and evenly balanced with
light-hearted fun and serious work. It was
an energizing and uplifting experience and
a great start for the new board of directors
of the Lesbian Community Project.
Pride at the Pittock and the Spirit of
Portlandia Awards
An evening of Lesbian Pride at the
Pittock Mansion was a sellout. Lesbians
from all over the metro area dressed up for
an evening of live entertainment, an as-

will sponsor From All Walks of
Life, A Pledge Walk to Benefit
AIDS Care and Education. All friends of
CAP and the entire Portland-Metro com­
munity are invited and encouraged to parti­
cipate in this vital fundraising effort to
support the education and social service
programs of CAP.
From All Walks of Life, scheduled for
Sunday, August 9th, is a 10k (6.2 mile)
“ rain or shine” walk that begins at Tom
McCall Waterfront Park, and winds through
all four quadrants of the Rose City.

These awards were presented to women
and organizations for their efforts in sup­
port of the lesbian community. An indi­
vidual “ Leadership” award was presented
as well as two “ New Leader’' awards. The
“ Leadership” award was presented to
Kathleen Saadat. The two new leaders
were Juanita Lopez Baldwin and Jill
Frankie. Organizations honored were the
Lesbian Forum, Rag Times, A Woman’s
Place Bookstore, Just Out, KBOO
Women’s Programming, Phoenix Rising,
Lesbian Art Movement, Live and Let Live
Club, Women of Color Potluck Group,
WindFire, and Lesbian and Gay Pride, Inc.
“ Walk day” registration begins at 10
a.m. Walkers are encouraged to sign-in
early on August 9th, and turn in their
pledge sheets and all pre-paid pledges at
the registration table.
Volunteers are needed now! People to
help with the many walk activities and to
help operate the walk itself on August 9th.

as a walker or volunteer worker, use the
registration form on this page of JUST
OUT, and send it to the Walk OfFice as
soon as possible. Questions about walking,
organizing a team, or working with CAP
on the walk-a-thon should be directed to
the Walk OfFice at 224-5105.
