place for a variety of 12-Step Recovery
Programs for the Gay and Lesbian Com
munity: Alcoholics Anonymous, Alanon.
Adult Children of Alcoholics, Overeaters
Anonymous. The Club also provides a sec
ure social atmosphere for recovering
persons. Social activities for the recover
ing community are also sponsored
throughout the year.

The Portland Gay Mens Chorus will
open its ninth season with a concert in the
new Performing Arts Center. PGMC be
gan with about two dozen singers and is
stabilized at about eighty members.
Approximately three hundred people have
been involved over the years.
PGMC recently received its fourth grant
from the Metropolitan Arts Commission.
Next spring PGMC will present a produc
tion of Lou Harrison’s opera “ Young
Ceasar.' ’

Pride celebrations have been held in
Portland since the early 1970s under the
auspices of several different groups. Les
bian & Gay Pride Inc., the most recent is in
the process of incorporation and every
thing has been accomplished except
501(c)(3) tax exempt status.

Out of the Closet is a thrift shop, man
aged by Phoenix Rising and Fred Menard,
which features vintage clothes, antiques
and other salable items. Monies benefit
non-profit organizations that encourage
people to make donations in their name.
Out of the Closet celebrated their first
anniversary last May 5th and their major
needs remain volunteers and donations of
saleable clothing.

Lesbian Aging Project
Portland Lesbian Choir
The newly formed Portland Lesbian
Choir has performed since early 1987 at
various events. The Lesbian Choir will
join PGMC in a combined concert for Les
bian & Gay Pride, June 27. About twenty-
five singers are currently prticipating in
the choir.

Portland Frontrunners
The Portland Frontrunners, a gay and
lesbian running club, finished 1986 with
an all time high in member participation.
The club won second place in the annual
Starlite Run with its “ Imelda Marcos Shoe
Collection” while its eleven member team
in the Hood-to-Coast relay won medals.
Two members completed the Gay Games
II Marathon and brought home a bronze
medal. Several members completed the
ORRC Portland Marathon and one com
pleted the New York Marathon. Members
entered almost every running event in the
Portland area including the OSP Run in
side the Oregon State Penitentiary in
Salem. Club members escorted and hosted
Brent Earle of American Run to End AIDS
as he ran through Portland on his run
around America, which is still in progress.

Phoenix Rising Foundation
The Phoenix Rising Foundation has
been serving the counseling and informa
tion needs of Portland’s lesbian and gay
community since 1979.
Their staff of professional psychother
apists offer a wide range of theoretical
approaches to such issues as sexual orien
tation. relationships, childhood sexual/
physical abuse, depression, anger,
domestic violence, parenting and personal
growth.
Educational services include a speakers
bureau available to non-gay groups,
inservice presentations to health-care
staffs, and classes/seminars of interest to
the gay community.
Phoenix Rising also sponsors retreats,
an adventure program and workshops.

The Lesbian Aging Project began in
January 1984 after years of discussion and
several unsuccessful attempts to start a
women’s retirement home, the long-range
goal of the project is a multi-level residen
tial facility foraging women. On the way
to this long-range project, LAP is planning
other ways to assist and care for our elder
sisters — a hospice, home care assistance,
social events, etc.

The PAL Project
The PAL Project (Personal Active
Listener) trains volunteers to provide emo
tional support on a one-to-one basis for
diagnosed persons. PALs are trained to
support their clients as they cope with the
emotional impact of diagnosis with a life-
threatening illness. Certain kinds of practi
cal support services are also offered, such
as in-home personal care, meal prepara
tion, shopping, house-cleaning, transpor
tation and companionship. In addition,
trained volunteer Resource Specialists as
sist clients to access such programs as
General Assistance, Social Security,
Medicaid, and food stamps. CAP operates
support groups for PWA's. PWARC’s,
seropostive persons and for the loved ones
of those diagnosed. Support groups meet
weekly and are facilitated by experienced
counselors.

Lesbian Community Project
The Lesbian Community Project is
Portland's only Lesbian organization with
a multi-issue, multi-cultural perspective.
LCP is building a strong Lesbian Com
munity: that is inclusive and diverse: that
can move forward together and
acknowledge differences; and that can de
velop supportive relationships with the
larger community.
LCP's variety of social, educational and
political activities are designed to assist
the Lesbian community as it meets today's
challenges and as it plans for tomorrow’s
possibilities.
LCP is a membership organization gov
erned by an elected Board of Directors.
They are committed to affirmative action,
cultivating leadersip, developing an active
membership and financial self-sufficiency.

Black Lesbians and Gays United
BLGU started in Portland in 1983. The
group promotes social functions and
serves as a political catalyst in the Black
lesbian and gay community. One of its
major goals is to serve as a support for
Black lesbians and gays working toward
unity in their community.

Against AIDS
POCUAA is a newly-forming consor
tium of Portland and Seattle lesbian and
gay minority community members. The
purpose of the group is to address AIDS
issues in minority communities. A major
focus of the group is the development of
dialogue and coalitions among the various
minority communities.

Lesbian Art Movement
The Lesbian Art Movement celebrates
lesbian art and promotes lesbian artists.
LAM provides support, information &
referral, and networking opportunities for
lesbian artists. LAM is eager to share the
artistic talents of area lesbian artists with
Portland art lovers

Cascade A IDs Project
The Cascade AIDS Project (CAP) is a
community-based, non-profit organiza
tion dealing with the AIDS epidemic in
Portland. CAP was founded by a group of
concerned citizens and private physicians
in 1983, when the first diagnosis of AIDS
was made in Oregon. Currently, five staff
persons and 250 volunteers provide up-to-
date information about AIDS and support
services for persons affected by AIDS
(Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome)
and ARC (AIDS-Related Complex)
Education about AIDS and the trans
mission of AIDS is the primary way to
prevent the spread of the disease, at the
present time. Providing such education to
persons at highest risk for AIDS is a funda
mental goal forCAP, As well as providing
education for the general public. CAP
maintains a Speaker's Bureau, publishes a
variety of AIDS-related literature, and
produces workshops and seminars for
high-risk individuals and the public.
