The play, by the late Win Wells, opened in the 1984 Edinburgh Festival a n d later m oved to the London stage, featuring this same casting. G ertrude Stein and a C om panion is a po rtra it of the long relationship of Am eri c a n writer G ertrude Stein a n d A lice B. Toklas. Stein is perhaps better known for her relationship to the "lost generation" (her term ) of writers an d artists in Paris dur ing the 1920s than for her own writings. LIFE LINK Louise L. Lee Wilson). The p la y tackles such topics as racism, British colonialism and the whole question of the “ w hite m an's burden."
