Vr WIN ANIGHT AT 'LA CAGE' Community notes b y B illy Russo Financial woes reduce important services Roseburg’s Gay and Lesbian Alliance (GALA) received no outside funding this year. And although there are volunteers to staff the 24 hour gay and lesbian helpline, and others willing to publish the monthly newsletter, Gay O r Times, there is very little money available to continue these services. At the July busi ness meeting it was decided to suspend pub lication of the newsletter to insure the integrity of the helpline. Presently, this column is Rose- burg's primary link with the outside world. The treasurer reported that a thousand dollars is needed just to keep the switchboard operational through the rest of 1986. He suffered night sweats, dehydration, low-grade fevers and rapid weight loss. He came out to his family and doctor while hospitalized and was im mediately isolated while his HTLV-III antibody test was being processed. It took about a week. This story, unlike many, has a happy ending. His family affirmed their love for him. And his test came back non-reactive. Gay Republicans take stand A handful of local gay Republicans are be coming more active and more visible as a result of Portland’s Rev. Joe Lutz’s primary win in Douglas County. The Baptist minister gay-baited his way to a countywide majority. His strong showing stirred strong sentiments on the gay issue. He returned to San Francisco last year where he remained until his death. His ashes will be returned to Southern Oregon where they’ll be scattered near the creek he called home. Local church sponsors weekly rap group Every Tuesday for the past five years the First United Methodist Church has hosted a gay and lesbian discussion group. The place at the Cow Creek Community Center, 15 miles east of rural Azalea. The perform ance was staged by "Those Wolf Creek People,” a local theater group. A dozen fag gots joined 75 Cow Creek residents at the community center, where Assunta Femia stole the last act with his presentation of the Fire Dance. It was a moving experience. And the dancing that followed included faggots dancing with faggots. Surely a first in this isolated rural community. PWA activist visits Roseburg Steve Politer, a PWA previously active in the San Francisco ARC/AIDS Vigil, currently ac tive in the S.F. ADS Foundation spent a week with the Roseburg community. He ended his visit by traveling to Portland where he marched behind our banner with about a dozen other GALA members.
