April, 1986 At the Western Cup Volleyball Tournament held March 7-9 in Calgary, Alberta, Portland’s C. C. Slaughter’s volleyball team garnered the third place bronze medal in an exceptional display o f talent and endurance. Matches be gan at 9 a.m. after the traditional opening cerem onies and continued at an exhausting pace until the last match concluded at 7 p.m. The gold and silver medals were awarded to multi-talented clubs from Vancouver, B.C. and Edmonton, Alberta, respectively. The eleven-team event was rounded out by other teams representing Vancouver, B.C., Edmonton, Alberta (which fielded a highly spirited and competitive w om en’s team). Calgary and Regina, Alberta, and finally Sas katoon, Saskatchewan. Portland was the only team that ventured up from the U.S. Medals were presented at a lavish brunch held at a stately downtown hotel. Two Port land team members were also the ‘proud’ recipients o f som e not so glamorous awards including a smart silver lame clutch with ac centuating pink rubber gloves and a pair of emerald green heart-shaped sunglasses. The injured and dog-tired team members then trudged onto a plane for a flight back to Vancouver, B.C. only to pour themselves into their cars for the return to the Rose City. While on the subject of volleyball, experi enced volleyball players interested in trying out for the team(s)? that will represent the Portland area in Gay Games ’86 to be held this August in San Francisco are urged to begin attending weekly practices. Monday practices consist o f various drills and scrim maging. Tuesday practices are highly struc tured with emphasis on skill-improvement, conditioning and drills that relate to certain aspects o f the game. The Tuesday night practices are mandatory and are conducted by an exceptional coach and her assistant. KBOO pledge drive begins April 1 KBOO-FM (90.7) is Portland's only inde pendent listener-supported community radio station. Because its listeners support it financially, KBOO has the freedom to air such diverse programs such as Queersville, Womansoul and Bread & Roses. For 17 years KBOO has been on the cut ting ed ge o f radio, by broadcasting sounds, ideas and news not heard anywhere else on the radio dial. It is a practice that KBOO volunteers continually take pride in. As a community radio station, KBOO pro vides access, training and airtime to groups and organizations that have been traditionally denied this opportunity. KBOO is a valuable community resource that needs your support. Twee a year KBOO holds Member ship Pledge Drives to encourage its listeners to becom e members of KBOO. Yearly indi vidual memberships begin at $20, which is a relatively inexpensive price to pay for the con tinuing existence of KBOO. The Spring Pledge Drive begins April 1st with a goal of $40,000. Tune in to 90.7 FM, hear the great programm ing and show your support for y o u r community radio station.
