FILM For the fifth year in a row the Oregon A rt In stitu te offers Portland moviegoers the opportunity to view a selection of the finest in new world cinem a by women directors. The 5th Annual Contem po ra ry Women D ire c to rs Series, which is orga nized by the Art Institute's Northwest Film 8c Video Center, w ill run from A pril 4-M a y 25 at the Berg Swann Auditorium , 1219 SW PArk Avenue. The selection of film s, many of which have received recognition at some of the most p restigious festivals around the w orld, reiterate the powerful contributions women continue to m ake in cinem a, pro vid ing fresh perspectives on such issues as fem inism , fam ily, sexuality, youth and p olitics. A num ber of film s w ill prem iere in this series, which w ill include personal ap pearances by New York film m aker Yvonne Rainer (The Man Who Envied Women) and Vancouver, British Colum b ia 's Sandy W ilson (My American Cousin). Other film highlig hts include: Oriana (Venezuela, France. 1985), a haunting vision of a woman who returns to Venezuela after a twenty-year absence to se ll her Aunt O ria na's hacienda, and Best Feature First Prize w inner at the 1985 C annes Film Festival; What Sex Am I? (1985) and Why Women Kill (1984), two controversial docum entaries by actress- turned-director Lee Grant; Anna Banou: The Daughters of Utopia (France, West Germ any, 1983), is a poignant docum entary which te lls the story of six women who em igrated from Eastern Europe to Palestine in the 1920s, bringing with them the ideas of M arx, Herzl and Russian fem inists; Su Fre d e ric ks The Ties That Bind (1984), which d eals with the film m a ke r's relationship with her mother and her m other's haunting recollections of the holocaust; Las Mad res De La Plaza De Mayo (1985), one of this year's Academ y Award nom inees for Best Fea ture Documentary, Las Madres is a vivid account of the Argentine mothers who protested in Buenos A ire s' Plaza de Mayo; and Lynn Littm an's (director of Testament) In Her Own Time (1985) and Number PRIDE GUIDE ’86 O ur Days (1977), both of which follow prom inent cultural anthropologist Dr. Ba rb a ra M eyerhoff as she studies the Fa irfa x neighborhood of Los A ngeles, a "vo lunta ry g hetto" where Jew s from a ll over the w orld have settled. Broken Rainbow , a feature-length docum entary about the im pending relo cation of N avajos at Big M ountain, w ill be shown at three different locations on A p ril 6-8. The film won the Academ y Award for Best Docum entary this year, and was nam ed the best docum entary at the SF Film Fe stiva l, 1985.
