E D I T O R I A No turning back by Jay Brown O n this, the anniversary o f Roe vs. Wade, m y thoughts returned to a woman I never m e t The w om an was m y father’s m other; her name was Hannah; she died of blood poisoning after attem pting a self-adm inistered abortion with a knitting needle. Hannah was a vital young wom an; she had grown up on a ranch in the wilderness of northern Arizona. Hannah was a strongly independent woman who found herself in an intolerable situation; shortly after filin g for a divorce from her husband (m y grandfather) she found herself pregnant w ith her second child. T hat is all I know o f the events w hich led to Hannah’s death, except that she obviously had no CÄIHARTIC COMICS OUR MAIN GOAL NEEDS TO BE, FIRST AND FOREMOST THE E R ADICATIO N OF HOMOPHOBIA IN OUR S O C IE T Y / NO LO N G ER W IL L W E t o l e r a t e THE HATRED AND S H A M E OF B E IN G THOUGHT OF as B E IN G S Featuring THE BROWN BOMBER & DIVA TOUCHE FLAMBE AND NO LONGER W IL L W E G IVE IN TO IN T E R N A L IZ E D HOMOPHOBIA BY SEEKING OR D E S C R IB IN G O U R SELVES AS STRAIGHT A C TIN G G A Y IN P E R S O N A L A D S / sick :, u n d e s i r a b l e H UM AN choice. She died in 1913, a victim o f the same forces which would, again, condem n many w om en to the same drastic action. S ociety has no com pelling need to deny women the right to control their bodies, but society does have a com pelling need to preserve the right o f self-determ ination. We m ust not allow the anti-choice forces to turn back the clock. We m ust preserve the right o f each wom an to make her own choice whether or not to term inate an unwanted pregnancy w ith a safe, legal abortion. t PEOPLE TIM E OUT © T h e S to r e fo r R ela x a tio n Yam hill Marketplace I10S.W .
