O n this, the anniversary o f Roe vs. Wade, m y thoughts returned to a woman I never m e t The
w om an was m y father’s m other; her name was Hannah; she died of blood poisoning after
attem pting a self-adm inistered abortion with a knitting needle.
Hannah was a vital young wom an; she had grown up on a ranch in the wilderness of
northern Arizona. Hannah was a strongly independent woman who found herself in an
intolerable situation; shortly after filin g for a divorce from her husband (m y grandfather) she
found herself pregnant w ith her second child.
T hat is all I know o f the events w hich led to Hannah’s death, except that she obviously had no

w om en to the same drastic action.
S ociety has no com pelling need to deny women the right to control their bodies, but society
does have a com pelling need to preserve the right o f self-determ ination.
We m ust not allow the anti-choice forces to turn back the clock. We m ust preserve the right
o f each wom an to make her own choice whether or not to term inate an unwanted pregnancy
w ith a safe, legal abortion.
