There are some w onderful m om ents: • the landlady (Julianne Joh nson ) “ catching" her tenant Chris (Pachosa) rolling around on the flo or with his pal Roger (Jay Randall Horenstein) is sure they're both gay. • Roger’s form er wife (Judith Branham ) w ho speaks only in song lyrics. • the highly ignorable Sal (Theodore Schulz) “ flashing" to the audience in desperation to be noticed by someone. • the hooker Nadja (Robin W oolm an) m aking a political statem ent by insisting she s a “ slut, " not a "prostitute." • the transsexual cop Betty (Steve Lee) sitting on a parking bench shaving because her beard is still growing. • Yovan, the Serbian revolutionary (Gary Brickner-S hulz), in a hilarious series o f slap stick knockouts and pratfalls. Division Street by Jim Anctil D ivison Street, by Steve Tesich. Directed by A lan a Beth Lipp. Interstate Firehouse C ultural Center. C hicago has never seemed like a real place to m e (m ore like an idea than a city), but after seeing Division Street at the IFCC it seems m ore unreal than ever. This highly im p rob able farce cuts through a gam ut o f genres — fro m ethnic hum or to m istaken identities, unbelievable coincidences and double takes to pseudo-radical politicizing. For those of us w ho grew up (and cam e ou t) in the 1960s, it was a euphoric tim e — both painful and ex hilarating all at once. And there was hope! T hat's what Division Street is about — a quest to recapture the hope and com e to term s w ith w ho we are — now in the m id-80s. W ritten by Steve Tesich, who won an Oscar fo r his screenplay o f B reaking Away, the com edy Division Street deals with lost re volutionary ideals in a superbly wacky satire. The current production at the Interstate Fire house C ultural Center is directed by Alana Beth Lipp and stars som e well-known local actors. One m ight wish fo r a bit lighter touch on the surface (paticularly in Steve Pachosa’s interpretation) and a slightly faster com ic pacing. The m eaning w ould still be just as clear. B ut the funny lines are there in abun dance, and the audiences are obviously en JUftOut.Noverr.b^ -QOC This is a com edy with a message. In the m idst o f our present despair, Chris tells us: "T he frontiers o f dream ers is endless and we still have a dream . New dream s are bom and a glorious struggle takes place fo r the soul of a nation. The struggle is on." There's a lot of love that com es through in this play, a deep caring about each other despite our many differences. Som ehow this all seems quite germ ane to our own com m unity, while we seek self-definition in a tim e o f changing sex ual life-styles and m ulti-ethnic diversity.
