Harvey Milk School
opens In NY
A New York City public school fo r lesbian
and gay high school students has opened in
NY C ity’s Greenwich Village.
O rganizers o f the three-m onth-old Harvey
M ilk S chool said it was the first public school
in the nation to be geared specifically to gay
and lesbian adolescents, according to the
n ew York Tim es. In an editorial, the MY Tim es
called the school a "reasonable and con
structive p ro je ct”
The New York City Board o f Education is
operating the school in conjunction with the
Institute fo r the Protection o f Lesbian and
Gay Youth. Dr. A. D am ien Martin, the
institute’s executive director, described the
organization as a counseling group financed
in part by the city and the state o f New York.
All tw enty students — fourteen boys and
six girls ranging in age from 14 to 19 — say
they are openly gay and have had difficulty
fittin g in at traditional high schools and had
dropped o u t
A teacher at the Harvey M ilk School, Fred
Goldhaber, said that all o f the students
enrolled w ould be targets fo r abuse at regular
public schools.
R ichard O rganisciak, director o f offsite
education program s fo r the Board o f Educa
tion, said the program at the Harvey M ilk
S chool was organized to provide a standard
education to teen-agers excluded from the
m ainstream ” at their high schools.
"If these kids d o n ’t want to go to school
anywhere but this one place,” he said, “ what
are you supposed to do? The im portant thing
is to get them back into a school, address
th e ir problem and get them on the diplom a
track."
A ll 20 students in the Harvey M ilk program
are school dropouts o r truants who have
been receiving counseling. Dr. Martin said
that the organization has no recruitm ent
program and that the students had com e to
the institute on their own initiative.
Gay Olympics
back in court
Attorneys fo r the 1986 Gay Games II filed
suit in the (J.S. C ourt o f Appeals in San Fran
cisco on June 12 to lift its ban on the use of
the term “ Gay O lym pics."
The appeal stems from a ruling by (J.S.
D istrict Judge J.P. Vukasin which also
awarded the G.S. O lym pic Com m ittee
$97,000 in attorneys’ fees to be paid by the
gay gam es prom oters. Judge Vukasin ruled
that the term Gay O lym pics was a "deliberate
and w illfu l” infringem ent o f the (J.S.O.C.
tradem ark.
"C ongress didn’t give the G.S. O lym pic
C om m ittee unlim ited use o f the word for all
purposes and all tim e," attorney Mary C.
D unlap said. "O lym pic is a 3700-year-old
generic word.”
Dr. Tom W addell, a decathlon participant
at the 1968 O lym pics in Mexico City, sought
to hold the first “ Gay O lym pic Gam es" in San
Francisco in 1982. W addell's group was
forced by the G.S.O.C. to drop the word
“ O lym pics" and call the event "Gay Games.”
D unlap said W addell had never sought to
infringe upon the tradem ark.
In fa c t she said, Waddell offered a com
prom ise where every advertisem ent
letterhead and T-shirt would have a
disclaim er saying that there was no connec
tion between the Gay Games and the
O lym pics.
D unlap pointed out that the G.S. O lym pic
C om m ittee has given “ passive approval" to
such events as the International Police
O lym pics, the Special O lym pics and even the
Nude O lym pics.
A lawyer for the G.S.O.C. countered that a
law passed by Congress in 1978 gave exclu
sive use o f the word O lym pics to the G.S.O.C.
and the I.O.C.
"Any use of the term dim inishes the
econom ic value o f the word for licensing and
fund-raising purposes," the G.S.O.C.
attorney said.

task force
The Lesbian and Gay Task Force o f the
A m erican Friends Service Com m ittee
(AFSC) is currently developing a regional
program . The program w ill have a modest
budget and a small staff (probably one
person in Portland and one in Seattle). It will
be a part o f the com m unity relations division
o f the Pacific Northwest Region o f the AFSC,
w hich includes Oregon, W ashington, Idaho
and Montana, and will operate w ithin the
AFSC organizational structure. AFSC's ask
ing individuals and organizations in these
com m unities to contribute their experience
to guide the program developm ent process
by com pleting a survey designed for this

N ational Gay Rights Advocates has filed a
brie f w ith the C alifornia C ourt o f Appeals in a
suit fo r loss o f “ co n so rtiu m " (m arital com
panionship). The p la in tiff in the lawsuit is
Jam es Crabtree. His lover o f ten years, Jack
Allen, was stabbed by an assailant and died in
C rabtree’s arm s.
Leonard Graff, NGRA Legal Director, said:
"There is no question that if Crabtree and
Allen had been law fully m arried, Crabtree
w ould be able to sue fo r loss o f consortium .
O f course they were not m arried because no
state perm its sam e sex marriages.” The trial
co u rt had dism issed th ; suit because Crab
tree and Allen were not m a rrie d
Jean O ’Leary, NGRA Executive Director,
said: “ h is patently unfair that this couple o f
ten years cou ldn’t have the same rights o f a
heterosexual couple m arried fo r a single day.
W e've taken this case to furthe r expand and
define the rights o f gay and lesbian couples.”
O ’Leary noted that a few years ago the
C ourt o f Appeals ruled that a heterosexual
couple need not be m arried as long as they
had a stable and significant relationship.
