This fall, the Red Rose School w ill be offering a course entitled: L it erature on the Fringe: C u ttin g Edge Issues o f Gag Men. The Red Rose School is a non-affiliated left oriented organization whose m otto is “ C on tinuing Education for Activists.” There are no tests or grades. T uition is a low sliding scale, $10 to $20 in advance, $15 to $25 the first n ig h t Tuition covers printing, pu blicity and hall rental. Mo one w ill be excluded fo r in a b il ity to pay. Readings w ill not be required, but discussion w ill center around the issues as they are treated in the readings. Hopefully, if male gay liberationists cou ld develop a “ line” on these issues, a dialogue with other com m unities and interest groups could be entered into m ore effectively. For further registration inform ation, please call 232-0199. Chance, Weinreich co-direct Phoenix Rising counseling Phoenix Rising recently announced the ap pointm ent o f Patricia J. Chance and Robert W einreich as co-directors o f its counseling service. Chance and W einreich are splitting the duties o f the Job between them ; they jointly supervise the counseling staff; Chance has assumed adm inistrative duties and W einrich adm inisters Phoenix Rising’s extrem ely successful Tuesday night program . Both W einrich and Chance are com m un ity activists o f long standing and have both been m em bers of the Phoenix Rising C ounseling staff for some tim e. Both are also in private practice. In private practice W einreich and Chance have prim arily worked w ith lesbians and gay men. “ My professional interests,” Chance said, "are in w orking with adult children o f alco hol ics, incest survivors and children living in lesbian and gay households.” Chance received her MSW from the Port land State University School o f Social W ork. C urrently she is also a therapist for O ur New Beginnings, a halfway house for w om en in the crim inal justice system. W einreich says his goals involve, “ W orking on personal growth." His personal goal fo r Phoenix Rising “ is to provide an environm ent fo r the growth o f the gay com m unity; to pro vide high quality professional counseling services.” W einreich received his doctorate in psy chology at the U.S. International University in San Diego and while there organized a peer counseling program at the San Diego Gay and Lesbian Center. The Phoenix Rising Tuesday night program , which W einreich ad m inisters, is sim ilar to the program he o r ganized in San Diego. 9 The basis o f the Tuesday n ig h t program , W einreich said, "is to develop co m m u n ica tions skills and self-awareness.” The groups are facilitated by paraprofessionals (peer counselors) who have experienced the p ro gram and are then trained by the professional staff to lead the Tuesday n ig h t groups. "The existing program , the Tuesday night groups," W einreich said, “ afford an o p p o r tunity for lesbians and gay m en to grow so cially in a safe environ m en t” Patricia Chance and B ob W einreich are both active on the Phoenix Rising Speakers Bureau. They have also participated in the Gay Radio Show on KBO O . Rep. Katz to hold community meetings Vera Katz, State Representative (D-Portland) w ill be holding tw o tow n h a ll/co m m u n ity m eetings du ring the m onth o f O ctober. The first m eeting w ill be on Thursday, O ctober 18th, fro m 7:00-8:30 p.m . at the Friendly House S enior Center (in the M.W. Service C enter) at 1819 N.W. Everett, Portland. The second m eeting w ill be held on Thursday, O ctober 25th, fro m 7:30-8:00 p.m . at the Chinese B aptist C hurch at 1938 S.E. Ladd in Portland. Issues fo r the next legislative ses sion w ill be discussed. M em bers o f the com m u nity are invited to attend and participate in these open-forum style assem blies. There w ill be coffee and doughnuts fo r refreshments. Representative Katz has served in the Ore gon House o f Representatives fo r six terms. She has served as House C hair o f the Join t Ways and Means C om m ittee and as a m em ber o f the E -Board, the state’s budget com m ittee.
