Does one cast a ballot in favor o f conscience o r greed? If you believe you are better o ff than you were fou r years ago — that is, if you have a larger disposable incom e now than before, you w ill probably be inclined to vote fo r Reagan in the hope that you may have even m ore. However, if you are a m em ber o f a m inority, if you are Black, gay o r lesbian, oriental or anything other than WASP, you are in fo r trouble. You will not be protected if you do not toe the Cawthorne: the clear choice by D u ff Bishop Thirteen candidates have filed so far fo r the C ity C ouncil seat to be vacated by Charles Jordan. A lthough several able candidates are in the race, one candidate em erges above the rest as the clear choice fo r the position. Herb Cawthorne, S chool B oard m em ber, c o m m unity activist and educator, is the m ost progressive candidate in the race. He supports issues dear to o u r hearts. He fully supports the rights o f gays and lesbians to have protection against d iscrim in a tio n in housing, em ploym ent and public a cco m m o - Just Out. September 28-October 26 A dations. Herb has a long record o f co m m u n ity service including five years on the S chool Board. He is an historian and perform er w ho has developed one-m an shows portraying figures from Black history. F or tw o years he delivered social com m entaries on KEX radio which were thought-provoking and in fo rm a tive. Cawthorne is currently the D irector o f the O ffice o f Special Services at Portland State. Let m e share som e o f his th in kin g on to p ics o f concern to us: “ Historically, racism and sexism have served as the tw o sides o f a vicious vise w hic h has been designed to lock otherw ise capable individuals out of power, position and pres tige in Am erican society. B oth are deeply in grained, and both m ust be elim inated if o u r nation is to build on its m any strengths." “ G overnm ent has no right to legislate what r i a l party line. The party line is obsessed with funneling your hard-earned incom es in to the w ar m achine and is using you, the nonconform ist, as a scapegoat to that end. If Reagan w ins in N ovem ber, you w ill be stripped o f the rig h t to personal choice because he w ill say th a t the "m a n d a te ” given him by the “ m ajority” w ill allow his party to deny m inority rights. The Suprem e Court, w hich Reagan w ill pack w ith conservatives, w ill no longer pro te ct m inority views on questions o f morality. Your personal conscience w ill fall victim to the tyranny o f the moralists. The use o f m orality to nefarious ends is, o f course, nothing new. Anyone over the age o f forty m ust surely rem em ber what happened in Nazi Germany. Do we want that to happen here? Reagan says that m orality and politics are inseparable. He is using m o rality fo r m aterial p rofit and we will all pay the price. A vote for Reagan is an act o f treason. individuals do in the privacy o f th e ir own homes. And, it follow s that governm ent should protect the rig h t o f people to m ake their own choices about those w ith w hom they would like to be intim ate." “Attitudes do not change w ith o u t struggle. It takes courage to speak fo rth rig h tly on is sues, to take stands that m ig h t disturb the com fort o f those who benefit fro m the lack o f com petition which results fro m autom atically elim inating large groups o f people fro m the process o f achievem ent in o u r society." Cawthom e's vision and courage speaks fo r itself. The addition o f Herb C aw thorne to our City C ouncil w ould be another step to wards m aking Portland a great city fo r a ll its citizens. * « Cawthrone w ould be an accessible, atten tive and energetic m em ber o f the C ity C ouncil. His ideas on co m m u n ity eco nom ic developm ent w ould lead to m ore affordable housing, thriving sm all businesses and m ore energetic neighborhood associations fo r a healthy m ixture o f diverse people and incom e levels.
