The woman’s name was mentioned in the editorial. Soon after the woman’s name appeared in Just Out, she became the object of harassment to the extent that she has been forced to leave her home. As the editor o f Just Out, I have been called to account for "lack of sensitivity" by not consulting the woman before printing her name. I accept full responsibility for using the woman’s name in the editorial. Similarly, I will take full responsibility for publishing the name(s) of the person or persons who have perpetrated the attacks against her. The decision to use the woman’s name was not made lightly. Just O ut’s policy governing news reporting is based on Chapter Four of the Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual; specifically the following sentence in that chapter; "When a person becomes involved in a news event voluntarily or unvoluntarily, (s)he forfeits the right to privacy." Also, the woman's name had previously appeared in the Cascade Voice, (Vol. 2, Mo. 17; August 23.1983), in a postscript to a letter to the editor concerning the incident 1 also take responsibility for underestimating the racism in this community. If I had known that some bigot would use the information to harass the woman, I would not have mentioned her name. Mot even to thank her. 333 A L How do we deal with overt homophobia? To most of us homophobia is just an amorphous idea which confronts few of us directly. So we live our lives with the thought that homophobia always victimizes others, never me. Two weeks ago, Just O ut was forced to cancel an edition because the firm which had printed us refused to continue to do so. We were informed that the firm, Crawford Service Company, Inc., which owns and prints Mickel Ads, would no longer print Just O ut because of "personal reasons of the owners." A friend of Just Out, who had previously done business with the Crawford firm, asked an employee of that firm why they were refusing Just O u t’s business. "Is it money or homophobia?” he asked. “It’s not money," the Crawford employee replied. Just Out's attorney has sent a letter to Warren S. Crawford, the president of the firm, asking him for a statement on the matter. Mo reply has been received at this time. We at Just O ut believe that other letters to Crawford may speed an answer to our attorney’s inquiry. Help stamp out homophobia, write Crawford a letter. The address is: Warren S. Yesterday was Lesbian & Gay Pride Day. I will always remember that day. It is a terrible shame, however, that millions of people will never know the feelings that Saturday. June 16, left on thousands of my sisters and brothers because of the lack of supportive media coverage. I am hurt and angered that a day so positive, so supportive, could, in some newsperson's eyes, be sum Just Out. Julv 6 med up in one photograph and stuck with the obituary column. Let us not speak of the photo itself, glory ing for homophobic idealists the typical les bian — decked in dark sunglasses with a hand raised half-risen, indicative of one about to turn and hide away. Indeed, the photo (Section D. page 12. of the June 17. Sunday Oregonian. Sunrise Edition) was snapped at just the right time and the persons depicted were poor victims of the oppresssive, “This is how we see you — so this is how you are" society with which les bians and gay men must contend each and every day of our lives. O f course, no mention was made of the supportive and most welcome visit by the newly-elected Mayor Bud Clark's wife, who stated simply and directly, "You've supported us. now, for the next four years, we will sup port you." Mo mention was made of the outstanding work provided by volunteer monitors, whose job it is to keep things peaceful and non violent. And that's exactly what they did. Mo one can take away from me the feelings of pride and happiness renewed yesterday — instilled in me and my sisters and brothers. It is this knowledge that fills my mind, my heart, and gives me strength. I am young, gay and proud, and I want my rights MOW!
