ENTERTAINMENT Holly Near, Chilean group In friendship concert Holly Near will Join Inti-lllimani, the interna tionally acclaimed Chilean ensemble, fora 15 city National Friendship Tour this May, en titled "Nueva Cancion por la Paz en las Am ericas... Singing for Peace in the Americas." This musical collaboration pre sents a blend of cultures, musical styles, sounds and ideas from the rich Andean melodies of Inti-lllimani to the impassioned lyrics of Holly Near. Holly and Inti-lllimani have each been leading exponents of pro gressive music in their cultures. They will perform separtately and together in this pro gram of new songs for peace. Holly Near is a dynamic performer and gifted songwriter who continually challenges pre-conceived notions of her music. Follow ing the overwhelmingly successful national tours with Ronnie Gilbert of the Weavers last year, Holly toured Australia in December and returned to record a new studio album with Trapezoid. That album which will be Holly’s ninth on Redwoods' label is titled “Watch O ut!" and was released in April. Holly has addressed many issues through her music since the '60s when she sang against the CJ.S. involvement in Vietnam, to feminist and anti nuclear concerns in the 70s. The tour with Holly Near. Inti-lllim ani represents a musical collabora tion that reflects Holly’s commitment to cul tural diversity and international human concerns. Inti-lllim ani grew out of the New Chilean Song Movement which was stimulated by the cultural renaissance promoted by the gov ernment of Salvador Allende. Inti-lllimani plays more than 16 wind, string and percus sion instruments that belong to the Euro pean, indigenous, African and "mestizo" cultures which intertwine to form the rich musical heritage of Latin America. Inti-lllimani comes to the United States from Italy where they have lived in exile since the coup which overthrew Allende in 1973. Holly Near and Inti-lllimani have crossed paths several times in recent years. This U.S. National Friendship Tour grew from their col laboration in England last September when they performed concerts commemorating the 10th anniversary of the coup in Chile. The Friendship Tour follows Holly’s recent trip to Nicaragua, where she performed in hospitals, outdoor marketplaces, and popu lar neighborhoods. She, along with a delega tion of cultural workers, took thousands of dollars of donated equipment and supplies to artists in Nicaragua. In addition to an explora tion of Chilean culture, Holly sees the tour with Inti-lllim ani as a vehicle to tell people about the cultural renaissance which is now occurring in Nicaragua. The National Friendship Tour is sponsored by Cultural Work, Inc., the non-profit organi zation formed by Holly Near last year to fund and support cultural and educational work. The tour is coordinated by the Great Ameri can Music Hall. At the Music Hall, Holly Near and Inti-lllim ani’s concerts will be recorded live by Redwood Records for a September release. In addition to sponsoring the tour, CWI is coordinating a direct aid campaign in each tour city to raise money to send to Nica ragua, to the zones of popular control in El Salvador, to Guatemalan refugees and to people’s rights organizations in Chile. A goal of raising $50,000.00 nationwide is projected. Residencies are anticipated which range from one week to four months in school and com m unity settings.
