Holly Near, Chilean
group In friendship
concert
Holly Near will Join Inti-lllimani, the interna
tionally acclaimed Chilean ensemble, fora 15
city National Friendship Tour this May, en
titled "Nueva Cancion por la Paz en las
Am ericas... Singing for Peace in the
Americas." This musical collaboration pre
sents a blend of cultures, musical styles,
sounds and ideas from the rich Andean
melodies of Inti-lllimani to the impassioned
lyrics of Holly Near. Holly and Inti-lllimani
have each been leading exponents of pro
gressive music in their cultures. They will
perform separtately and together in this pro
gram of new songs for peace.
Holly Near is a dynamic performer and
gifted songwriter who continually challenges
pre-conceived notions of her music. Follow
ing the overwhelmingly successful national
tours with Ronnie Gilbert of the Weavers last
year, Holly toured Australia in December and
returned to record a new studio album with
Trapezoid. That album which will be Holly’s
ninth on Redwoods' label is titled “Watch
O ut!" and was released in April. Holly has
addressed many issues through her music
since the '60s when she sang against the CJ.S.
involvement in Vietnam, to feminist and anti
nuclear concerns in the 70s. The tour with
Holly Near.
Inti-lllim ani represents a musical collabora
tion that reflects Holly’s commitment to cul
tural diversity and international human
concerns.
Inti-lllim ani grew out of the New Chilean
Song Movement which was stimulated by the
cultural renaissance promoted by the gov
ernment of Salvador Allende. Inti-lllimani
plays more than 16 wind, string and percus
sion instruments that belong to the Euro
pean, indigenous, African and "mestizo"
cultures which intertwine to form the rich
musical heritage of Latin America. Inti-lllimani
comes to the United States from Italy where
they have lived in exile since the coup which
overthrew Allende in 1973.
Holly Near and Inti-lllimani have crossed
paths several times in recent years. This U.S.
National Friendship Tour grew from their col
laboration in England last September when
they performed concerts commemorating
the 10th anniversary of the coup in Chile. This

tour comes at an important tim e for Chile
where popular protests against the Pinochet
government are occurring on a massive
scale for the first time since the coup.
The Friendship Tour follows Holly’s recent
trip to Nicaragua, where she performed in
hospitals, outdoor marketplaces, and popu
lar neighborhoods. She, along with a delega
tion of cultural workers, took thousands of
dollars of donated equipment and supplies to
artists in Nicaragua. In addition to an explora
tion of Chilean culture, Holly sees the tour
with Inti-lllim ani as a vehicle to tell people
about the cultural renaissance which is now
occurring in Nicaragua.
The National Friendship Tour is sponsored
by Cultural Work, Inc., the non-profit organi
zation formed by Holly Near last year to fund
and support cultural and educational work.
The tour is coordinated by the Great Ameri
can Music Hall. At the Music Hall, Holly Near
and Inti-lllim ani’s concerts will be recorded
live by Redwood Records for a September
release. In addition to sponsoring the tour,
CWI is coordinating a direct aid campaign in
each tour city to raise money to send to Nica
ragua, to the zones of popular control in El
Salvador, to Guatemalan refugees and to
people’s rights organizations in Chile. A goal
of raising $50,000.00 nationwide is projected.
Residencies are anticipated which range
from one week to four months in school and
com m unity settings. To be considered, ap
plicants must submit the following: a
completed application form, resume, three
references relating to ability and experience,
and a sample reel of film or videotape. Appli
cation deadline: June 15,1984.
