Up and coming
Portland’s classic repertory theatre. The
New Rose, is presenting one of Shakespeare’s
dark com edies. A ll's Well That Ends Well,
with Jane Titus in the role of Helena. Directed
by Peter Fornara, A ll 's Well That Ends Well
opens March 16 and runs through April 28,
playing Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m.
O pening night tickets are $ 11; all other
perform ances are $8.
One o f Shakespeare’s last comedies. A ll 's
Well That Ends Well examines moral issues
in a society with m oral problems. According
to critic Jo h n C. Bean, Helena in A ll's Well
m ay be the culm ination o f Shakespeare’s
studies o f women. Bean says Helena is un­
questionably his m ost erotic heroine, a wo­
m an with m agically potent femininity.
Helena, Bean says, creates a world in which
sexual experience matters, and it matters
m ost because it cannot be separated from
the em otional and the personal. Helena is a
w om an in love.
Jane Titus, appearing as Helena, is one of
P ortland’s busiest actors. She most recently
played Ma Prama Rama Kree in the New
Rose production Christmas at Juniper
Tavern-, other roles include Natalia Landauer
in The Theatre W orkshop’s / A m a Camera,
Henny Berger in Aw ake a nd Sing, and Mrs.
C hisolm in The Petrified Forest. Titus is an
authoritative actor, she is always the charac­
ter she is playing.
D irector Peter Fom ara's Shakespearen ex­
perience is extensive; he has acted in and/o r
directed 20 Shakespearean productions,
m any o f them as Director o f the Portland
Shakespeare Company. Fornara most
recently directed and acted in Sam Shepard’s
Curse o f the Starving Class, one o f this sea­
son’s m ost successful productions.
Bertram , the object of Helena’s affections
in A ll 's Well That Ends Well, is played by
Sam Mowry, with Alan H. King as his sidekick
Parolles. Others in the cast are Renee Boutin,
Ken C olburn, Lee Forest, Am y Fowkes, War­
ren Harshberger, Ira Howard, Eric Pedersen,
Janet Penner, Rollie W ulff and Gaynor Sterchi
as the Countess. Costume design is by
Shaune W under; scene design is by Russell
G uinn and J im Gilsdorf is lighting designer.
