Year-end tax planning by Diana Plunkett Decem ber 31 closes off your opportuni ties, as a calendar year taxpayer, for 1983 tax planning. In January it is too late to decide upon the tax treatment of prior transactions. More im portant it closes off your opportunity to coordinate the two tax years — 1983 and 1984 — to your best tax advantage. During November and December it is the tim e to decide whether or not you are going to itemize and how to make your deductions work for you. It is the time to determine the m aking of such payments as interest taxes, charitable contributions, medical expenses, and employee business expenses in the current year or to defer such payments until the next year. Keep in mind, the federal tax law gives each individual a flat deduction known as the zero bracket am ount The Zero bracket am ount for a single person and heads of households is $2300. Only if your itemized deductions exceed your zero bracket am ount are you permitted to deduct the excess. The following are items to look for when deciding whether or not to itemize. • State withholding and estimated tax pay ments. Additional state estimated tax pay ments may be made in 1983 to decrease this year’s federal tax liability. • Property Taxes. Pay full year's payment Novem ber 15 or defer until January 1 if not itemizing this year. • Interest Interest you pay on your home, car, charge accounts, personal loans, etc. • Donations to charitable organizations. • • • • Including donations to Goodwill and The Salvation Army. Medical expenses. Though limited under current law. Accounting and Tax Preparation fees. Job seeking expenses. Job related expenses. Union dues, profes sional organizations and publications, continuing education, tools, calculators, briefcases, etc. Decide now and take advantage of year- end tax planning. Save tax dollars$$$.
