The lesbian and gay community in Portland has as many facets as a bird has feathers.
Within the broad heading of "lesbian and gay community” there are smaller diverse com
munities. Each of these communities is broken down into even more diverse communties.
Just O ut will gather news and do features of interest and concern to each of these
communties individually along with the lesbian and gay community as a whole. News about
nuclear disarmament lesbian and gay rights, discrimination cases, racism and oppression
within our community and outside of it
We will profile positive role models in our community along with doing features on groups
and organizations that cater to and offer alternative activities for lesbians and gays to meet and
relate. Monthly columnists will write about health, (ravel, finance, racism and religion.
Future features include articles about older gays, gays involved in hetero-marriages, gays
and alcoholism, physically challenged gays, gays in prison and unlearning racism.
Each issue of Just O ut will have local and statewide news along with news of what is
happening in lesbian and gay communities throughout the nation.
The Just Letters section of our paper will be an arena for debate and discussion of issues
pertinent to the community and letters of criticism and praise
Our Just Entertainment section will enlighten you with activities happening in our area
from theatre to films, music to mime, workshops to rallies.
To be the total community paper we strive to be we will need your help. Phone us with news
tips and items of interest What may seem like a minor incident to you could be of major
importance to our readers. Also for us to keep abreast of functions, events and meetings we
should attend we need to know that they are happening.
Enjoy our premiere issue.
We re back folks! And we re doing it our way.
Our attitudes haven’t changed, we just have more freedom to bring you balanced coverage
of news relevant to the lesbian and gay community.
What is the gay and lesbian community, you ask? About the only thing we have in common
is our sexual orientation; from there on we re a multitude of attitudes and lifestyles. We re
politically radical, politcally conservative and all stripes in between.
We. at Just Out. have no ax to grind other than the eradication of oppression. We want to
inform and in doing so we ll just give you news representative of all the community, not a
minority view.
We, at Just Out, are men and women working together. . . as you will see when you go
through these pages.
In order for Just O ut to do all this (uh oh. here comes the pitch) we need your participation.
We re asking you to let us know what's happening in your part of the community. We have a
calendar section, Out About Town, where you're free to let others in the community know
about you and your activities. Theatres, musicians, workshops, rallies, movies, sports or
anything else you'd like people to know about. Also, if you have a n y news, tell us, that's what
we re here for. We re your newsmagazine.
We re Just O ut folks! Let us know how you like us. You can call us at 223-9652, or drop
by our office at 923 SW 17th on your way to the MAC Club (we re just a block away).
