POETS OF THE
Under the title of "Poete of the Pacific Coast" West Shore will in
January begin the publication of a monthly department, in which will ap
pear the beat four or five poems submitted each month for competition for
the priiea mentioned below. There are on the Pacific coast many writers
of graceful and touching verse to wjiom is offered no suitable means of pub
lication, no Journal whose literary standard la sufficiently high to give these
poems the endorsement their merit deservea. For this reason West Shori
lias decided to act as a medium between these writers and the cultivated
public who would be pleased to have the poems thus placed before them.
The poems will be printed the last week in each month, and the entries
will close on the twentieth of the month. Thus, all poems received between
December 20 and January 20 will be entered in the January competition,
and ao on to the end of tbe year.
The Judgea will be persons of literary culture not connected with West
Shori In any capacity. The name and address of each writer will be pub
lished at tbe foot of tbe poem. All mss. should be endorsed " Entered for
competition " In order to avoid mistakes. Competitors are requested to be
careful In giving their names and addresses. Unused mss. will be returned.
Tbe following prties are offered each month, making twelve first prizes
during the year 1HK1 :
First Prim. A volume of one of the standard poets twelve-mo. aive, hand
somely bound in full padded leather, with full gilt edges. The prite
winner may designate his choice of the following volumes: Dante,
Milton, Scott, Burns, Moore, Wordsworth, Browning, Toe, Jean Ingelow,
Mrs. Hemana, Mrs. Browning and Favorite Poems, a volume of choice
selections from all the poets. These are all new books, specially issued
aa elegant gift editions, and are from the ehelves of Stuart A Thompson,
the well known book sellers of Portland. The volumes will be endorsed
by the editor as having been given for the first prise in the West Shori
poetic contest for the month for which It was awarded. In addition to
to tills a biographical sketch of the writer will also be given.
Sicond Pain. A subscription to Wist Shore for six months, to be sent to
any address.
Third Piki. A subscription to Wekt Shori for three months, to be sent
to any address.
Grand Pam.-In addition to the monthly first priie, at the end of the year
the poem tint shall lie decided to be the best sent In during the entire
year will receive an elegant copy of one ol the great classic poems with
Illustrations by Dow, and the portrait of the writer will be published,
so that those who havt read the poem may have the additional pleasure
of seeing the face of the one who has contributed to their enjoyment.
No on shall be eligible to compete who Is not a resident of California
Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, Alaska, Montana, Idaho, Nevada'
Utah or Arisooa. Any person winning a priie will be barred from compet
ing during the remainder of the year except for a priie higher than that
already woo, and winner of a first priie can only compete for the grand
