candidate of that party for governor. Mr. Ferry
is a native of Illinois, and he practiced law in
Waukecjian, in that state, from lfl-IG to 18")!). During
that time he was elected to the ollice of mayor and
twice served as presidential elector from tho congres
sional district in which he resided. He was a good
soldier in the civil war. During a portion of the time
he was on the stall' of (iovemor Yates, of Illinois, and
organized several regiments of volunteer troops. About
twenty years ago Mr. Ferry came west to Washington
Territory, and from ISTOto IS?.'! he held the ollice of
surveyor general for the territory. President (irnnt
appointed him governor of Washington in the latter
year, and he held the ollice until the change of politics
in the national administration eight years later. Then
he moved lo Seattle and became associated with the
linn of McNaught, Ferry, McNaught & Mitchell in the
practice of law. When the elder McNaught retired
from the linn, Mr. Ferry succeeded him as vice presi
