ered with a carpet of fern, but this Is easily
killed, and when the down timber Is burn
ed it adonis excellent pasture for cattle,
horses and sheep. Tin lllg and Mill Nee-
tucca valleys are now chiefly devoted to
stock raising and liee culture, and lh time
li not far distant when manyfat cattle will
be driven from theae valleys to Portland
and other lanre markola. lie culture la
one of the main Industries and the honey
li not surpassed In any state. The swarms
average from fifty to seventy flve pounds
per season.
The Columbia Hrldg Co. was recently
Incorporated In Portland, with a capital
stock of 2,000,000, for the mrm of con
structing a bridge across Columbia river
south of the mouth of Die Willamette.
The same day the Portland A luget Ntind
R. R. Co. filed articles of Incorporation.

000, and the object to contract a line of
railroad from Portland to Heallle, with
one branch up lwie river, another down
the Chehalis to dray's Hubor and a third
up the west side of the sound to Pott
Townsend.
