is an energetic young business man, a speculator and
mechanic, and manager of the extensive lumbering
business of D. Myers. He received the largest dem
ocratic majority in the state at the last election.
H. P. Naptos, democratic representative from
Malheur county, is engaged in the practice of law in
Vale. He was born March 3, 1855, in Elk Hill, 8a
line county, Mo. His father, Wm. B. Napton, was
chief justice of the supreme court of that state, and
his grandfather, Thomas L. Williams, was chancellor
of Tennessee. Mr. Napton is a graduate of the
Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Va. He
practiced law in Joplin, Mo., and was a partner of
his brother, Thomas L. Nipton, of Batte, Montana.
He came to Oregon in 1882, and has become promi
nent in the legal practice and politics of the eastern
portion of the state.

the militia of the state.
Peter Paquet, republican representative from
Clackamas county, is a resident of Oregon City, and
was born in Bt. Louis, Mo., January 13, 1839, where
he attended publio and private schools. In 1852 he
came to Oregon with his parents, being six months on
the road, and settled the next year on a farm in Clack
amas county, where he spent bis boyhood. He learned
the boat building business, which he has followed oc
casionally, engaging also in saw-milling and general
contracting and building. He has built some of the
finest bridges, steamboats and buildings of the state.
He was elected a member of the house from Clackamas
county in 1870, and in 1872 received the nomination for
county clerk, being defeated by only a few votes. In
1874 he was the republican candidate for state sena
tor and was defeated by twenty votes, with three can
didates running. In 1S82 he received the nomination
on the republican ticket for county judge, but the
ticket was unsuccessful. In 1SS3 he was a successful
republican nominee for the legislature, Mr. Paquet
has been elected a member of the city council of Ore
gon City nine times, and has served one term as
mayor and three as president of the board of fire del
egatea. He is a prominent member of Multnomah
Lodge No. 1, A. F. fc A. M, a history of which ho is
now writing.
Hiram B. Parker, republican representative from
Clatsop county, is a well known business man of As
toria. He was born in Orange, Vt, September 1,
1827, and received such education as tho schools of
those days, with but three months teaching each wm
ter, could offer. At the age of twenty-one he Ufjto
hotel keeping in a neighboring town, and in 1S52
ho came to tho coast via Nicaragua, continuing his
voyage from Han Francisco, his first stopping place,
to Astoria. He engaged in lumbering until 18C0. Jn
185.) he was elected sheriff of Clatsop county, and
again two years later. In 2 ho was sergeant at
arms of tho Iioubo of representatives of tho state, and
since then has served as justice of the pcaco and city
recorder several terms, as deputy collectoi of internal
revenue ten years, and polico judgo two years. Ho is
now chairman of tho board of school directors for dis
trict No. 1, and is proprietor of tho Parker House,
and has largo steamboat and other business interests.
Thomas Paclhks, representative from Washing
ton county, was born in Schleswig, Denmark (now in
Prussia), February 1'.), 1835. He emigrated to Amer
ica, and in 1801 camo to Oregon as a soldier in tho
military expedition to protect immigrants from ho
tilo Indians. For several years ho worked at a print
er in various portions of tho state, and then settled on
a farm in Washington county, in 1H71, being now en
gaged in farming near Garden Home. Mr. Paulsen
is president of tho North Pacific Dairy Association,
has served as county commissioner, and was also a
member of tho last legislature,
James V. For, republican representative from
Washington couuty, is engaged in farming near For
est Grove, and was born in Manchester, Hcott county,
111., August 1, IBM, coming to Oregon in 1881. Mr.
Popo practiced medicine for twcnty.fivo years, aud
served two years in tho Ninety-first Illinois Infantry
Volunteers as a private, hospital steward and surgeon.
F. 8. Powell, republican rcpresenUtiro from
Polk county, resides at Monmouth, where ho is en
gaged in farming. Mr. Powell is a natfvo of Illinois,
and was born March 20, 1 S.'iO, emigrating to Oregon
in 1851 and settling on a farm in Linn county. In tho
fall of 1870 ho moved to Polk county for Utter eda
cational facilities for his family, where ho ha served
two terras as justice of tho aco.
W. K. Price, democratic representative from Jack
son county, is a resident of Tolo in that county.
0. 11 Bicker, republican, represents tho county
of Douglas, and resides in Norfolk, where ho is en
gaged in farming and logging. Ho was tarn in Pen
obscot county, Me, Nor. 10, 1850, and uwed to Min
oeapolis, Minn., in 1H59, where ho resided until 1875,
when he camo to Oregon. Mr. Bickers has taught
school both in Gardiner and Norfolk.
