THE DALLES
Is situated on the Columbia river, io?
miles northeast of Portland; has a
population of about looo, has good
schools, an academy in charge of the
Sisters, several neat churches, weekly
newspaper, and numerous business
houses, ot a substantial character. A
line of steuincrs make daily trips from
here to the Cascades, there connecting
mm nmroau ami steamers lor 1'ort
land. It is on this line that most of th(
iar-famtd Oregon scenery can he
viewed, A line of mail stages start
irom Here daily lor all the Eastern
Oregon mining towns, making various
connections at different points, and
finallv run thrniwh Idaho to Kelton
on the Central 1'acilic railroad. The
trip from The Dalles to Kelton is made
in live days. A railroad of fifteen miles
in length connects The Dalles with
Celilo, from whence a tri-weeklv line
of elegant steamers make regular trips
iu 111111111111, vvauuia, and m the hum
mer season to Lcwiston, in Idaho Ter
litory. From Wallula a line of rail
road makes daily trips to Walla Walla,
r 'I' ..-.1 r 1 ... '
. i., miu irom tnence daily stages to
Waitsburg, Dayton and I.cwiston. It
will thus he seen what an important
position The Dalles occupies. It is
really tha toll-gate where all travellers
anil all freight for any of the above
mentioned places must pay a toll. With
the building of the locks at the Cas
cades, The Dalles will commence grow
ing, and the day is not far distant when
it will be a city of from .1,000 to 5,000
inhabitants.
One of the principal lines of business
in Eastern Oregon is
stock MtMNO,
Forty thousand bead went to the
Extern States last Spring and 25,000
to California via Winnemucca by rail
road. The local trade is with Seattle,
Olymphi and Victoria, In Astoria
they are contracted for by the 1000
head for canning purposes, to be
shipped to Liverpool and other English
markets. The people of Oregon can
put those cattle on the market at one
and a half cents gross weight. In
Umatilla county to-day there are not
less than 1,250,(100 sheep. All these
immense herds of cattle and sheep get
their living out of doors the year round,
wilh few exceptions. The agricultural
resources of Eastern Oregon are un
equaled. The fruit in this locality is
equal in quantity and quality to the
products of any other State in (he
Union.
