February. THE AVE ST SHORE. 12H SAILORS WANTED. The great want of Washington Terri tory is people, and those of a working character. Our country abounds with raw material that could be worked up into marketable products. In our anx iety to attract settlers we have been too eager to call attention to our timber forests and grain lands, overlooking the wealth of our vast inland sea, as regards its fisheries. We want some men from the Eastern coast to write back to their friends in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Jersey, and tell those "toiler by the sea" what a fortune awaits the hardy fisherman here, with the same labor and less than half the dan ger they must necessarily encounter there. Bring out fifty of1 the sturdy Marblehcad or Uarnegat boys to this place and set them to halibut fishing, and in ten years we would have half a dozen good thriving towns along the Straits of Fuca. This element of population is especial 1 v requisite to the developement of every maritime State. The superior scaman hipofthc Federal navy, in the late war, was mainly due to the culture of our sailors in the coastwise fisheries. When the Alabama struck her colors to the Kearsarge, it was not merely a tribute to the national government. It was a tribute to the splendid seaman ship begotten by a life of toil begun at the cradle and ending only at the grave. Such is the education of the American fisherman. His ambition leads him up wards from the little smack to the big India packet with her three skysails set. If we would maintain our prestige as a commercial people, we must encourage nmbltoUS seamanship. The names of Ilowland, Giinnell, Macomber and others illustrious in the history of American commerce, take their origin in the fisheries of New England. With the wealth amassed in this way, they hav e dotted the ocean with lines of packets plying to all the great emporiums of the world. We have just as good facilities here, if the right class of people are brought out to utilize them and bring about the com mercial advancement which seems though distant, a part of our manifest destiny.
