CENTENNIAL WEEK
PORTLAND.
IN
Throughout the hrnwl extent of thin
great Republic our fellow citizens are
making preparations to celebrate with
becoming ceremonies the Centenuitil
anniversary of our Nation's birth. One
hundred ycaro ago the comparative
liaudful who peopled the Colonies of
Noith America, struggling for Freedom
against the armies of the moat powerful
nation of the earth, published to the
wjild their Declaration of lndcpcn
dence, and through danger, toil and
self-sacrifice, achieved their freedom,
and our people took mnk among the
nation of the earth. Since then a cen
tury has rolled by, a century of unprece
dented progress for us as a people in
Commerce, Population, Sciences, Arts
Wealth in all that contributes to the
estenti.il growth of a prosperous nation.
The great section of country, which in
the early days of the Republic was a
v-ist wilderness, has become fruitful
under the hand of the hushamlntan, is
the busy mart of commerce and munu
fucturc and is thronged with vast num
bers who give allegiance to our com
mon country. The white sails of our
commerce ore rilled by the breezes of
every climcj our flag is borne upon
every sea and commands respect from
all the nations of the earth. All this
has been the work of the hundred years
just completing their course, and the
history ot nations oners no parallel to
such advancement. With hearts truly
grateful to the beneficent Providence
which has thus blessed and prospered
us our citizens, cherishing the memory
of those who won for us the privileges
of a free people, and desirous of
suitably commemorating the day which
forms so marked an epoch in our his
tory, are making extensive preparations
all over the land tor the proper cele
bration of the approaching Fourth of
July. e who have made our homes
on this far North-western Coast, claim
in common with our fellow countrymen
this birthright of freedom, and to have
equal share in the traditions and glories
of our native land, and being so far
distant from the great center where the
masses of our people will congregate,
should testify our patriotism by gather
ing at some convenient place and unit
ing in the general rejoicing. The
citizens of Portland, recognizing the
fact that our Slate, since its inception,
has kept pace with the general advance
ment, and realizing the foremost position
our city holds on this northern coast,
deem it just and proper that they should
take the initiative in this matter, and
have accordingly made full arrange
ments for ceremonies fitting the occasion.
It is proposed to continue the celebra
tion in our city four days, namclv, the
Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Seventh of!
July, for each of which days a distinct
programme will be arranged. Every
effort will be put forth to make this a
marked era in our history, and one
which will tend to strengthen and per
petuate the patriotism that has always
characterized our people. To this
Celebration the Centennial Executive
Committee in the name of the Citizens
of Portland cordially invite the People.
