THE WEST SHORE.
For The Wkst Shore.
THE PHANTOM SHIP.
BT MEM LINTOK.
The day hnd furled her whlte-wlnged sails,
And anchored midway In the tide;
And lo! a-down the Western sky,
A blood-red banner marked the road
' The crimson sun had slid to rest.
A tweet, young moon, bent like a bow,
Hung low within the dome of blue
As fulntly outlined aa a star
- Seen through a filmy veil of mist,
And, dipped 1U horni In twilight mm,
And dipped and swung like wing of bird.
Above, the stars were dimly lit;
Below, a black and angry sea
Incessant growled and lashed the rocks,
And tore the wnves In threads of foam
' This hungry demon of the sea.
Outside the breakers roar and surge
A black-Milled ship with anils a-spread,
As grim and black as Erebus
Hose suddenly between the waves,
This ghostly spectre of a ship,
And hung and swung a-top their oresU
While laihed aloft among the shrouds,
With white, wet face and streaming hair,
A lady hung In snowy dress,
And close beside a black-mailed man
Held to her breast a pointed sword.
A wild, wild shriek rang on the air,
And two white hands were flung out wild
Iuto the night, as If to grasp
.Borne friendly hand within the gloom
.'Some human hand outstretched to save.
And then like any spectral thing.
As noiseless aa tho wings ot Doom
'That fling their shadows on our lives,
This ghostly, grim and blaok-hulled ship,
Aalowly slid from off the sea
From off the hungry, waiting sea, .
And left no traco where It hnd hung
And swung a-top the created waves.
ADVICE TO YOUNG MEN.
A lady who signs herself a martyr to late
hours, furnishes the following:
Dear gentlemen between the ages of
j 'eighteen and forty-five,' listen to a few

make a social call of an evening, go away
at a reasonable hour. Say you come at
eight o clock, an hour and a half is cer
tainly as long as the most fascinating of you
in conversation can, or rather ought to
i deaire to use his charms. Two hours can
jj be very pleasantly spent with music, chess,
or other games, to lend variety; but kind
sirs, Dy no means stay longer. Make
shorter calls, and come oftener. A girl
that is a sensible, true-hearted girl, will
enjoy it better, and really value your ac
quaintance more. Just conceive the agony
of a girl who, well knowing the feelings of
father and mother upon the subject, hears
the clock strike ten, and yet must sit upon
ithe edge of her chair, in mortal terror lest
papa should put his oft-repeated threat into
execution: tliat of coming down and in
duing the young man to breakfast. And
rwe girls understand it all by experience,
and know what it is to dread the prognostic
of displeasure. In such cases a sigh of re
lief generally follows the closing of the door
"behind the gallant, and one don't get over
jthe feeling of trouble till safe in the arms
,iof Morpheus. Even then sometimes the
dreams are troubled with some phantom ol
ian angry father, and distressed (for all par
ties) mother, and all because a young man
ill make a longer call than he ought to.
JJow young gentlemen friends, I tell you
hat the girls will do. For an hour and a
half they will be most irresistably dunning
nd fascinating; then beware, monosyllabic
responses is all you need expect, and when
the limits shall have been passed.
tattling query shall be heard coming down
Itairs, 'Isn't it time lo close up?' You
jnust consider it a righteous punishment,
Aid taking your hat meekly depart, a sad
der, and it is to be hoped, a wiser man.
Do not get angry, but the next time be
areful to keep within just bounds. We
ant to rise early these pleasant morn
Jugs, and improve the 'shining hour;' bnt
when forced to be up at such unreasonable
Hours at night, exhausted nature will speak,
and as a natural consequence, with the at-
oa speed in dressing, we can barely get
Awn to breakfast in time to escape a rep
rimand from papa, who don't believe ii
beaux as though he never was young
sad a mild, reproving glance from mamma,
who understands a liule belter her poor
daughter's feelings, but must still, to keep
up appearances, disapprove outwardly.
And now, yourur men. think about these
tilings, and don't throw down this paper
with a 'pshaw, but remember the safe side
of ten.
