Let me tell you something of my
own personal experience. Carlinville
Illinois, is my home town. Carlinville
is the county seat of Macoupin county.
Soon after the Civil war the Deop e
of Macoupin county decided to build a
court house. When completed it was,
and is, a beautiful buiiding;stateiy and
imposing, costing over a m Ilion dol
lars when labor and material were
cheap. Just such a buildiug as Med
ford would like to have. From boy
hood to young mar,hood I lived under
the shadow of the load the taxpayers
had to carry. For almost forty years
the people struggled to clear their
county of the burden imposed upon
them by the bui'ding of this court
house. Finally when the last b onds
were paid off they had an immense
meeting of the citizens of Macoupin
county at Carlinville, the largest assem
bly known there. They killed the fat
ted ox, burnt the paid off bonds and
rejoiceff exceedingly.
It was a lesson .never to be forgot-
